An interesting read: http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/toda...ily_angry.html
A grocery store refused to do the writing on a child's birthday cake for a family with some rather uncommon names for their kids.
It's toeing a line, but really I feel like you have to let people be stupid if they want to be stupid. I wonder how much the kids will appreciate their names when they grow up? |

I don't have a problem with a grocery store not wanting to put racially insensitive things on cakes. They have to do business, they have to deal with everyone seeing the cakes as they check out... Plus, the grocery store has the right to refuse service to anyone they want. It's a private business, not a public entity.
I wish I could run into a member of the Aryan nation like this in public. We'd have a few "words" and they'd leave with a better "understanding" of racial equality.

Kids are great tools for pushing one's own strange ideas into the public's eye(paraphrasing Pinnocchio's Stromboli).
This might need to go in the Lobby, BTW.

I do seriously feel sorry for the kids. Unless they change thier names, they are going to have hellish lives ahead of them. I dare say, it'll probably be a good thing if they have hellish lives, as they would no doubt end up as misaligned as thier own parents anyway.

I feel for the kid. I guess he could go by Adolf H. Campbell, or "Dolf" for short.
If it were my bakery, I would'a shook my head and did it.

Unfortunately you can't force people not to be a-holes.

But to play devils advocate...Just cause one guy did something really bad 60+ years ago does that mean we have to throw out a perfectly good name and a perfectly good mustache?
Also with any luck a name like that will cause the child to go through some serious doubting of his parents ideals early in life, sparking a teenage rebellion, a name change, a haircut and a disassociation with his ****** up lineage....then again he could be the next grand dragon |

Political correctness would be the state deciding that they wouldn't legally recognize the kids' names, or removing them from the parent's home because naming their kids that way constituted child abuse.
Why couldn't the parents decorate the cake themselves? Names like that are for the ego-gratification of the parents, who obviously like the negative attention; it's sure not looking out for their kids' best interests. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they'd tried to get the store to do it specifically to get a reaction, and would have been disappointed if the store had just done it and been quiet.
Poor kids. Unless the parents have some life-altering positive changes, those kids will be wrestling with their parents' legacy for their whole lives, whether they embrace it or not.
