Pool sharks?

How many of you play pool?

I've been a casual player since I was a kid, I'm not great but I know my way around a little bit.

I'm just starting to get into it a bit more and was wondering if anyone had some tips for me? Should I pick up my own cue? I was looking online but really don't know the differences between say a jump cue and a break cue etc. If there are any decent three piece cues for around 50 bucks that you could recommend it'd be appreciated. Something like a sneaky pete or even unfinished altogether, I'd love to finish it myself.

I wanted to put a shark in my pool, but I was told by someone that they need more room than my backyard has to offer... stupid fish.

i love playing pool but am by no means good enough to be called a shark. i have however won quite a few free rounds of drinks at bars when dart bopards get involved....

poker is my game though, i play quite a bit online and in person and supported myself for awhile by playing.definitely would love to get more into pool though, awesome game/s!

You can't get a cue worth a crap for $50. You'd be better served learning how to pick out a good cue at the pool hall. Being able to pick out a decent cue without looking like you are picking out a decent cue can be lucrative.

At one point I would have called myself a pool shark. I used to play about 10-15 games a day. I was quite good. I got a lot of money off my friends and when they stopped playing me for money, I turned to the local pool hall and the old guys there that had been playing longer than I have been alive. I still won more than I lost. Won all the tournaments for my age group as well, I was 16 at the time. Now I barely play at all. Maybe once a month, if that, but I can still clean up a bit.

As for cues. I always used a 19oz snooker cue for 8 ball billiards. Why? Because I liked the way that it felt, I still have it around, but it needs to be re-tipped. I suggest going into a billiards store and ask to try some out, they should let you try them out. Although $50 wont get you much of a cue.

I'd call myself a ok player, but with me it's either hit or miss; no middle ground.

Inspired by this thread, I just went and cleaned off my table. It reminded me of a few things that I forgot. One, I can no longer clear a table in under a minute and a half (took me 5). Two, a good tip job is just as important as a good cue. I just played with one of our crappy cues, but I did a good tip job on it a few months back. It shot good and straight. Learn to tip your cues and how to do it right, this is very important as it will shoot straighter and hold the chalk better. A good tip will make a poor cue into a good cue, but a bad tip will turn a good cue into a bad cue.
