Pop Quiz! (aka Picking a Derby Name)

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently started training for roller derby (somewhat to the detriment of my bass practice ), and one essential component is the badass derby name. I've been floating a lot of ideas around but still haven't made a decision. I want something amusing, original, but not too obscure. As such, I thought I'd take a poll to see how many people are familiar with the following names/references*. Just a yes/no response for each would be really helpful!

*Yes, I know this is a skewed demographic, but any feedback is valuable at this point.

-Jerrica Benton
-Rilo Kiley
-Edith Piaf
-Eve Ensler
-D'arcy Wretzky
-Brazen Head
-William the Bloody

I used to play Roller Derby. I'm glad to see it coming back.

-Jerrica Benton - No
-Rilo Kiley - No
-Edith Piaf - Yes
-Eve Ensler - Yes
-D'arcy Wretzky - Yes
-Brazen Head - Yes
-William the Bloody - Yes (Spike would be a good one)

Alas, that name's already taken by the head ref of the Minnesota RollerGirls (who I actually just to see play against our Windy City Rollers).

I'm excited you know this one, though, I was afraid it would be one of the more obscure ones (although it still could be).

Isn't any good roller-derby name relative to a good gimmick? What's yours?

From the people I've talked to, the persona mostly develops after the name, so I think it'll be name first, then gimmick. Besides, there are so many derby girls out there already that not stepping on someone else's name becomes a challenge.

My TB name is taken from the name of a comic book character and isn't particularly clever, plus it fails the "not too obscure" test (I don't know a lot of people who have read Hopeless Savages).

*Bump*

Anyone else like to weigh in and help me make an informed derby-naming decision? Pretty please, with sexy fishnet-rash on top?

No*7. Never heard of any of them.

I feel you, on not wanting to be too obscure. I takes a Ren. Faire geek, or Creative Anachronist, to get my derby name, Ulrich von Hurtem. Ulrich von what now? Just pick a name that's works for you, whether people get it or not.

It doesn't have to be a play on some famous person's name. For example, these fine derby names(already in use): Hannah Grenade, Daddy Dykalicious, Disco Tex, Geek Rage...

Good luck, and have fun with your derby name.

PS please vote in my derby poll:
Do you roller derby?
