Not that these are the brightest people, but stuff like this tends to deter me from home-style chemistry:
One little mistake, such as unscrewing the bottle cap too fast, can result in a huge blast, and police in Alabama, Oklahoma and other states have linked dozens of flash fires this year – some of them fatal – to meth manufacturing.
"Every meth recipe is dangerous, but in this one, if you don't shake it just right, you can build up too much pressure, and the container can pop," Woodward said.
When fire broke out in older labs, "it was usually on a stove in a back room or garage and people would just run, but when these things pop, you see more extreme burns because they are holding it. There are more fires and more burns because of the close proximity, whether it's on a couch or driving down the road." |

I think meth is a terrible drug, and is absolutely no good for you, to be sure.
But I hear people say things like this all the time - how the concoction of chemicals people use to make it means they're basically smoking rat poison/cleaners/etc.
That's not how basic chemistry works. Traditionally cooked meth uses chemical reactions to create it. That means changing the basic physical properties of the substances used.
For a simple analogy, imagine combining Chlorine (a poisonous gas) with Sodium (an explosive in water metal). Dangerous stuff. Fortunately, the magic of chemisty creates NaCl - common table salt.

Can you imagine eating something still containing traces of the by-products of its production?
All the chemistry aside, the biology of meth is just freaking scary. We did a whole section on drugs in this psychobiology course I took. Got to see some post-mortem pictures. Crazy to see how it works and what it does to people's brains. |

And +1 to what Corey said about how it can mess up your whole body, and quick. Yikes. |

I imagine that stuff can really tear down your body with repeated abuse. Scary stuff.

Seen a story about people who unwittingly bought houses that were former meth labs.
Now they cant sell them cause people found out about it and are afraid to buy it.
Though the hype about it was overblown, I'd not want to buy a house like that....couldn't ever sell it again. |

Hard to believe that this poison was first p popularized by the military in WW Jr. to keep soldiers and airman awake.

It was more "pharmaceutical" so to speak.
The stuff people make today called bathtub crank is really crude and has all kinds of weird stuff in it.
When P2P (I think it was) became unavailable, people substituted it with who knows what.
I understand Aldridge Chemical used to sell Phenol Proponol (sp?)
That is not to say the original stuff was a health food supplement...LOL |
