I'm also willing to live with these inconsistencies because I realize that in time things will average out. Additionally, as a member, I have learned what is tolerated and what is not based on my interactions on this forum. While you (the collective you being the mods on this board) claim that you are not necessarily looking to smite particular users, I'd like to go on record stating that I'm not necessarily looking to push the boundaries of what's acceptable on the board either. I enjoy TB, and I understand that it is not just an environment as much as it's a product that has been polished and trimmed much in the same way a horticulturalist trims leaves off of buds and flowers for growth and presentation. You guys are the trimmers. And for the most part I think you guys as a whole do a good job of being fair and maintain an environment that I enjoy enough to support with a paying membership. I also recognize that many of my past posts and content might be construed as those leaves that need to be trimmed in order to improve the product's presentation. Not only have I taken those licks, but I've tried to align my current posts within the boundaries that have been defined by past infractions.
So when I posted this particular picture, I had quite a few to choose from. I had one that was the pope going through a TSA scanner. I didn't post it because I felt that I might offend people that are Catholic. While I'm an atheist, I'm not participating in the activities of any particular denomination of Christianity, or any other religious organization. With that said, I do understand the general idea of the practices and beliefs of each organization and I have a 'to each his own' philosophy when my personal opinion differs with those who adhere to religion. I recognize that it's generally a positive influence in most people's lives, and if people are enjoying the lives they've built entwined with these believes then who am I to judge? I have even defended regular TB'rs who post religious references in their sigs or at the end of their posts when other atheists decided to call them out as 'offensive'.
While I understand that the term on the image I posted is commonly recognized as 'taking Gods name in vain', it is generally considered a common colloquial term safe enough to use on primetime TV. It is a term that is considered a soft way of verbally expressing frustration. And I emphasize the word 'soft'. There are many other more 'colorful' ways of expressing frustration. But I selected that picture to share in this thread because I thought it was funny and harmless in the way that it didn't degrade anyone in particular. It's funny because anyone could relate to the soldier in that situation and pretty much everyone would come up with some variation of the term 'God **** it'. I think it would be a far stretch to say the image was mocking people of the Christian faith in a way that could be construed as blasphemous. Additionally, I think the image was very tame, and it's an equally far stretch to equate it to something typical to 4chan.
I'm not really complaining about the image getting yanked. Images get yanked for petty reasons all the time. Images also get yanked for legitimate reason too (as is the case of the image FL Knifemaker was talking about -- I didn't see it and based on the circumstantial response to it, I don't really want to). It's part of what you do, and like I said earlier, you guys are human. Sometimes we'll agree, sometimes we won't, but I do agree that this is your jurisdiction as a mod not mine. I also understand that there needs to be a certain level of appropriateness for our younger TB'rs in order to keep the site along the ideals of the vision Paul set in place. Now like Chris, I have a young boy who is often curious as to what daddy is chuckling about on the computer. I don't mind him looking over my shoulder occasionally when I'm on TB, but by no means do I consider him to be the audience of this site. Nor do I think we should tailor our content for him. My kid still thinks he's getting away with something when he sees the word 'stupid' or 'idiot' in a book. Additionally, as a parent I control what he is exposed to, and or what I might potentially expose him to. While there is definitely a lot of stuff on the internet that I would not expose him to, or even view in his presence, I would have no problem if he saw that image. Like I said he is able to hear that phrase on TV or in a movie I might take him to go see.
Still all this aside, this is finally your jurisdiction and your decision. I'm not upset about that or even the fact that the picture got yanked. I didn't create it. All I did was post it. I am curious as to how this picture came to your attention. Was it flagged as inappropriate by another user? Because I can see that if it was flagged, then you might remove it to keep the peace. I also realize that it came after a particular picture that was removed, which might have put this thread under the mods' scrutiny. So while this thread was being scrutinized you saw this image and decided to yank it because it 'might' be offensive to a subset of users. If that's the case, then why this one, and not the images of Jesus walking among raptors, or riding on the backs of dinosaurs? I'm not a christian, but if I were, and I took my religious icons seriously, I think I might find that more offensive than a colloquial phrase of frustration. But again, this is that inconsistency that I was referring to that is just human. I'm ok with that. I defer to your expertise in this manner because until now religious defamation is not my expertise.
I type this next paragraph with no intention of causing myself to get banned for publicly challenging your authority. I hope that I've made it abundantly clear that I have no intention doing this. My intention is to just use this situation to establish a little public clarity. My complaint here doesn't stem from the action and decision of yourself as a mod to delete the post, but the fact that it comes attached with infraction points. Thank you for noting my PM by the way, and I want you to know I don't want to put you on the spot by airing our dirty laundry here. That's not my intention. I will say this however, if anything, you and I would both agree that we're experts on infraction points here at TB. You (collectively as a mods) issue them, I (as a TB supporting member) have extensive experience receiving them. Most of the points I have just kind of shrugged and said 'ok. lesson learned' and let them expire. But for the sake of everyone here wouldn't you say that two infraction points for this is a little heavy, considering the standard of my past infractions as a means of comparison? I admit. I'm not too smart. I don't learn quickly. I have learned many lessons here the hard way, but my journeys and sabbaticals have provided me a rough guideline for what's acceptable and for what's not. I even went a whole year without getting an infraction or banned. (Like I said. I'm dumb, but I celebrate these small victories). BUT, in my ever so humble opinion, I felt this was a little harsh. Again I still I defer to your authority in this situation, but I need clarification. In the past I have learned from you that there is some kind program that automatically generates infraction points and the length of their expiration dates. Is there a tool that mods can use to override this, or is it set in stone once initiated? If it's automatic, might I suggest that we look into a tool that would allow you this discretion in your authority as a mod. I'm not a mod so I'm not aware of all the tools that may or may not have at your disposal other than the Delorean time machine you guys keep in the backalley secret forums. please don't ban me again. | You've earned my respect. |
