I know next to nothing when it comes to electricity so bear with me.
The other day my mom was blowdrying her hair when suddenly the power stoped working to that outlet. We soon discovered that the outlets to the adjacent room stopped working as well. What might be the problem?

Locate the tripped circuit breaker (swithchy looking thing, it'll be in a different position than the rest)
Turn circuit breaker off then on, close panel

edit: yeah, you get the picture

At first I thought the ground fault interrupt (GFI) had popped, but it wouldn't reset, so I went out to the breaker box and, sure enough, the breaker had opened. I turned it off, then on, and we were back in business. However, I cautioned my daughter not to run the space heater and the hair dryer at the same time.

A hair dryer and space heater running together shouldn't throw a breaker.

lowsound | the ceramic space heaters i use draw 9 amps.....a hundred watt bulb draws 1 amp......a soft breaker can trip below its rating....i'd say its very likely a breaker

lowsound | Space heaters are known to suck a LOT of amps and often trip breakers when other electrical devices are being used.

lowsound | if they are on the same circuit they will. that's probably in excess of 20 amps with just those two appliances - a 1500 watt space heater (common size) is going to draw in the neighborhood of 13 amps, and that's about the power draw of a strong hairdryer on high heat as well. even if that circuit was specifically designed for high-current appliances (i.e. a 20 amp kitchen breaker), both of those on the same circuit would most definitely blow it, especially if there's some lights on the same circuit too.
what i want to know is why is someone running a space heater and a blow dryer at the same time (i'm presuming in the same room)? seems sorta reduncant.

a tripped Ground Fault Isolator. Sometimes one GFI services multiple outlets. |
