Small Ky. church votes against interracial couples - US news - msnbc.com

The funny part is the lady who insists she is not racist. Frankly, I don't care who they do or do not let into their church, the fact that they can't own up to how they feel is just very weak. The irony is that I doubt if anyone is surprised that there are deep racial issues at a small church in Appalachian Kentucky. I lived in KY for almost four years, and I am certainly not surprised. Denying a couple membership because of their racial compostion is textbook racism.

I don't know why they'd want to be a part of that church in the first place.

I thought this story was fake when I first read it, then I saw where the church is located. Bummer that it's true.

I saw that story this morning. It was equal parts bizarre, sad and funny

Because some a-hole told them they can't. That's the only appeal I can imagine, although I'd go hang w/like-minded peeps myself.

For the most part, black and white churches have always been segregated.

What exactly is your point? Attending a church of people similar is different from denying certain people membership.

Well if you like "attending a church of people similar" and think it's OK, then how do you go about keeping it "similar"?

You don't have to do anything but enjoy the company of those who are drawn to your services. The church I attend is a 142 year old traditionally black church, but whites have joined it. The majority have black spouses or biracial children, but some do not. All of them felt comfortable enough to join. The similarity arises from enjoying the worship and fellowship. That is not something that is tied to skin color, IME. The point is that all blacks do not want to join anymore than every white person, regardless of the color of their significant others or children.

My gut feeling is that if Gwenneth Paltrow or Eminem showed up, they would have been let in the party.

I find it interesting how you take pleasure in seeing a white person show their racism but become offended when someone displays a black person's racism.

Your thread title is "This is pretty funny." which speaks for itself but yet you got riled when someone posted Jay-Z's (alleged) racism...

I'm not offended. In the link I posted, the church clearly stated that they would not accept racially mixed couples. In the link about Jay Z, people claimed to be kept out due to their race. Nowhere is the an actual quote from the staff or the sponsors of the party stating a desire to keep out whites. My point is that Jay Z and Beyonce have some high profile white friends, and I would be shocked if they were kept out.

If the link had clearly stated shown that whites were denied entrance due to their color, I would condemn it. Nortonrider, however, presented heresay, and not actual evidence of racism.

I'm usually one of the first people to point out to Cheese that there are two sides to every coin with a lot of his threads, but you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill with this one.

I saw the story, and I thought it was funny. Everything I post is something I find funny or interesting at some level. I don't know about you, but I honestly cannot think of any other reason to start a thread.

Unfortunately this story hits close to home.

At one point in my life, I was briefly flirting with a sweet, cute, black girl. Things never really materialized with her, but I do remember a very sobering conversation with a close family member about all the **** her and I would receive from some of my family members should a relationship start. My current girlfriend is half white, half latina, and I've already had to deal with some very ignorant comments from people who are self-proclaimed "not racist". Guess what, any sentence that starts with "I'm not racist, but...." chances are, the next thing that comes out of your mouth will be horribly racist.

We definitely still have a long way to go.

If you want to present it, you need to google it and provide the link youself. It is not my job to make your point in a discussion.

... because you clearly missed it the first time, I bolded it this time. There's no perfect being, there's racists everywhere, doesn't matter what skin colour. You shouldn't get so worked up when somebody posts an article of a black person's racism when you post one of a white person's.
