Pretty grim news (Edinburgh)

I dare say things like this probably aren't that uncommon, but it was on the road that runs parallel to mine, literally a 2 minute walk away.

Mother's balcony plunge after three children die

POLICE were last night waiting to question a seriously injured woman over the "suspicious deaths" of three young children.

She was found lying outside a building where the bodies of two boys and one girl, all of primary school age, were found after a gas explosion.

A police source said: "The assumption was that the children died in a gas explosion at the flat, but this does not seem to be entirely the case.

"It would appear that the children did not die in a blast.

I've taken a few seperate parts from the article, not quoted the whole thing. Apparently the parents are going through a divorce and there had been troubles regarding custody.

Either way, 3 small children have died, likely murdered.

Time and again over the years I've seen news reports of parents who 'can't cope' (tip: avoid needless stress by living within one's means) and thus choose to take their own lives, but lack the courage to do so until after they've murdered their own children for one twisted and selfish rationalization or another, thereby cheating these young innocents out of their chances in life.

Some alleged 'adults' would do well to grow up before having children. Or better yet, just buy a dog...

In the twisted psycho mind of some parents, children are the "ultimate" weapon when it comes to bitter divorces. And the more you love your kids, the more effective the weapon they are. In some instances it's simply one parent turning the children against the other, or one parent not allowing the other to see or speak to their children - that stuff hurts really bad but happens every day. I'm figuring that the ultimate f-u to the other parent is to do something like this. It's sick, sad, and incredibly tragic.

Unfortunately this is true all too often today. Reading the story from the OP I can't help but be reminded of a similar local tragedy from early '09. Dauphin Island Bridge Tragedy

The 'if-I-can't-have-them-then-no-one-can' mindset.

It's too bad that kids who are caught in the middle of divorce proceedings can't be sequestered under court order at a safe house (with the cost of room and board billed to mom & dad) while the recalcitrant brats which pass for their parents duke it out in the courts.

This sort of thing, sadly, isn't new.

When I was a freshman in HS (1977), my science teacher was in the midst of a divorce. There were two children involved.

Her estranged husband showed up one afternoon with a shotgun, shot her, the kids, then himself, because she had made it clear she was not going to reconcile with him.

She was a really cool lady too, a student favorite, and an excellent teacher...tore us all up for this to happen.

We as a species are capable of the most heinous & barely-imagineable evil. To fully understand the mind of someone who does this type of thing- or even *just* suicide, I think one would have to have been at the very least*nearly there*
(NOT excusing/condoning/defending or really comprehending it, mind you)

You think so too? I've found myself thinking the same whenever I hear of such incidents involving these sorry excuses for parents.
