The Price of Gas

Sign in to disble this ad
This sure does put it in to perspective!

The price of Gas versus Printer Ink (in U.S. dollars)

All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just
illustrates how outrageous some prices are.... You will be really
shocked by the last one!

Compared with Gasoline......

Think a gallon of gas is expensive?

This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..........$9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10..00 per gallon

Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ...... $33.60 per gallon

Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER...

Evian water 9 oz $1.49..$21.19 per gallon! $21.19 for WATER

Ever wonder why printers are so cheap? So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at............... (you won't believe it....but it is true........)

$5,200 a gal. (five thousand two hundred dollars)

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!

This still does not ease the pain of your next trip to the pump...

Seems a bit pointless, coinsidering it's all about consumption. So the perspective thing goes out the window (ie, who uses a gallon of printer ink at a time . . .)

I don't think computers arbitrarily adjust prices on Iced Tea, though.

I wish my car ran on 1% milk, it's only 2.69/gallon around here!

Too bad cars do not run on Diet Snapple, Lipton Iced Tea, Gatorade, Ocean Spray, Brake Fluid, Vick's Nyquil, Pepto Bismol, Whiteout, Scope, Bottled Water, or any other liquid which has always costed more per gallon than gasoline but is not consumed at the same rate as gasoline so it's entirely different.

I wish gas would get that expensive. Then this whole rising gas prices thing would end and some new transportation would arise out of necessity.

The price of gas is what it is.

It will get more expensive, and I'm confident it will be over $5 a gallon in 5 years.

I don't plan to change anything about the cars I drive or the way I drive. It's just a cost of getting around.

Personally, I'd like to see the US make a massive public investment in restoring its passenger train systems, paid for by a gas tax of 20 cents or more per gallon of gas.

If people stopped paying $20.00 a gallon for bottled water or $10 a gallon for Koolaid (Gatorade), the price would plummet in no time. I never buy bottled water because what comes out of my tap tastes better, and don't drink Gatorade either. Fortunately, for the producers of those products, there is no shortage of people who don't mind paying 100 times (Gatorade) or 1000 times (water) what it costs to produce.

opec and taxes determine the price of oil. given (essentially) unlimited demand, gas prices can be manipulated by artificially creating shortages.

whenever the time comes that oil production has peaked, or is actually in short supply, then itll be a more comparable. also, sugar in the usa is artificially high due to subsidies, so some of your examples that contain sugar are not just going to be pure supply versus demand, though.

neat list. its like a tsunami that has enough water to cover some state in four inches of water, or a fire that gives off enough energy to power a city for a number of days: all fun facts that really dont put anything into a useful perspective.

Actually, computer programs determine the price of gas.

Could be worse, we could be paying €2.00 ($2.89) a LITER. $2.89*3.8 = $10.98 a gallon.

That's an inflation rate of roughly 5% per year.

People get all freaked out about the price of gas because it's a uniform commodity, so you can easily see the price going up. Or down. Increases in other prices are harder to see. Food gets repackaged into smaller quantities per container. Clothing fashions change. Cars get more features.

This list was sent to me. I found it interesting in that gasoline and other oil products are commodities that the majority of people can't seem to do without for transportation and other things. I heat my home with oil and it is very expensive to do so now but I need to stay warm. The other products on the list are all things we can live without. Still, comparing quantities of various liquid consumable products does make for interesting observations. Heck, beer and soda pop are more per gallon than gas in many places as well.

Another thing to consider: It's much easier to deal with high fuel prices when you don't live in a large country.

Gas prices have been around $4.00 a gal around here for a while now, and it was only about 20 cents cheaper before that happened. I've seen it above $4.00 here, too... but, I dunno. Imo, it can't be helped, so why bother stressing about it? Yeah, it sucks that it costs $100 to fill up my gas tank, but it seems to me that states with higher gas prices and prices of living should raise their minimum wage a bit higher to supplement it. It's hard to get by after things like child support, health insurance, and all of the taxes are taken out. My last paycheck was over $600 before taxes and all of that. Afterwards, it was a measly $315.
That's where, imo, the real problem lies.

those prices aren't calculated by what the cost per gallon- they take the price per the lowest amount(the most expensive per unit) and use that cost to calculate the gallon price rather than what it actually costs to purchase a gallon of the item. You can buy a gallon of lipton iced tea for about $5. Same with bottled water. In fact, you can get ultra premium water from health food stores for usually around $.70/gallon once you have purchased the container. The extra cost for the lower units of iced tea are in packaging...
