pro bowl before super bowl ***???

Sign in to disble this ad
guess I could surf the net and find out why the probowl is being played a week before the SB, but I like reading fellow tb'rs posts and there feelings on this. To me it does not make any sense I thought the pro bowl is where the best of the best and play a pretty much meaning less game for fun. To have a game like that before the Big Game is stupid. IF there is a reasonable explanation that the NFL decided to do this I'd like to know.

As I understand it, was moved to the week before the superbowl to keep it within the scope of the season and because interest was being lost in it where/when it was. All players who are from teams that are in the superbowl obviously don't play in the pro bowl, which I'm sure is fine with them.

^ that. Maybe this way they'll actually try to their potential since they know that a lot of people will actually be watching.

My hometown qb #4 said he is honered to be selected but more than likely wont play..he has been picked 11 times but only played in 4 probowls. I can just see a team that made it to the SB and get injuries in the Probowl, event though they dont hit hard you can still get hurt. liked the idea of ending the season with the probowl watching all the different players from the differnt teams, so is this just this season or is it gonna be like this from now on?

I think they are going back to the original format next year or the year after.

While doing only mental research I think the probowl was the only "allstar" game that happened after the season. All other sports have it somewhere in the middle.

I can't think of another pro league that has it after the season.

I hate it. Depending on which two teams make the SuperBowl you could wind up with a lot of guys that were voted-in, not playing. It would be better to get rid of the dead week before the SuperBowl, play the SB the Sunday after the conference championships and then play the Pro Bowl the weekend afterward like always. That would shorten the season by a week.

I also don't like they took it out of Hawaii.

Of course I'm a Bears fan so when and where the Pro Bowl is played is practically a moot point to me.

I really think this was a dumb move by the NFL. Say it is a Colts/Vikings SB. That means there would be fourteen players that were picked but won't play. Yeah, smart move NFL!

My guess is that the league thinks more people will pay attetion to it this way which would increase revenues.

I agree that it's pretty stupid, though. Really, I wouldn't be sad to see the game eliminated alltogether as it's kind of a joke. I think the teams should still be selected but the game not played -- something like the All-American selections.

I don't watch it for the same reason I don't watch the NHL All Star. In punishing sports the risk of injury is too great (I understand that) and thus the players don't really try. You never see any good hts in either of these games.

It wouldn't hurt me to just have the game go away.

Anymore so many of the guys that are chosen either choose not to play, or are injured and can't play anyway. And it's not like any of them are so underpaid that they'll miss that Pro Bowl bonus or they get or can't afford a trip to Hawaii out of their own pocket.

I'll actually watch the PB this year. In past years, I skipped it because it came after the season finale, the SB, but now it's in the week when there's usually no football and we're all jones'n. It's a smart move that will be reflected in much higher ratings.

If half the players the fans voted for don't play in the Pro Bowl, I'm not sure ratings will be "much higher". In fact they might be lower.

It's an interesting experiment in any event.

it's good that the athletes competing in the superbowl will not be able to play in the pro bowl. even then, i think the players in the pro bowl won't really be giving it their all--why risk your career on a meaningless dog-and-pony show?

i agree with the desire to abolish the actual pro bowl game. and we have an nfl commissioner who wants to EXPAND the regular season by a game, while teams like the colts bench their starters in meaningless games. ...and now there's talk about measures to prohibit that practice to protect starters. the nfl doesn't treat its players with the respect that they earn--the money's just too good to make them risk their health *just one more time.*

i like it. i'm way more likely to watch the probowl in the annoying week in between the championship games and the superbowl than after it. that said, i still think there should be no actual probowl game. elect players to the probowl team, but don't bother with the game, it'd be like the all-madden team or something... just an honor players can put on their resumes (which is basically what it is anyway).

Doesn't matter to me if they moved to to midseason. I still wouldn't watch it. IMO it's nothing more than a popularity contest and a lot of the players are picked don't have stats that don't warrant a pro bowl appearance.
