I don't use iTunes for loading music in my iPod. But I'm sure what you are seeing on the iPod's screen is not a problem. You have to use the software on the PC to load the music. The iPod's menus are inactive when it's plugged into a computer.

This is going to sound odd, but give it a shot.

If you have a printer connected via USB, inplug your printer from your PC and try again. My friend had a similar problem with her IPod and someone suggested this to her.... and it worked. There was a conflict between the devices.

Have you tried to drag and drop them?

The ipod screen itself will say "connected eject before disconecting"... and that's what it's supposed to do. You load songs onto it using ithe computer, you don't use the ipod itself. You drag files from the Music Library to the icon on the left task pane that says "iPod", in iTunes.

Freaky, I'm in exactly the same deal. Guys at work gave me a nano, I've been using itunes on the pc for a long time and figured it would be a sinch. Also, working in IT for exactly 20 years you'd figure I should be able to work it out. Yeh right. It busted my chops for about an hour. I upgraded the software on the ipod but found you have to go to the ipod withing itunes and select the music tab where there is a radio button to either sync auto or manual. You have to set it to manual.

I then dragged the music to the ipod and it copied accross fine.

edit: Click on your ipod on the left hand pane under devices, click on the summary tab at the top, select manually manage music and videos. Drag from you standard library to the ipod.
