Professional musician and personal life?

Sign in to disble this ad
Not sure in what topic this should be,so i'll put it here.

I've become somewhat of a "professional" bass player, meaning my instrument is paying my rent, bills and college. The way its going even after i graduate( BA in economics) i am probably gonna pursue a career as a musician.

Now i dont have a steady girlfriend or a wife,so i need some feedback about how the misses around the world react to coming late after a gig,or being on tour for a couple of months or generally not being a "regular" man that works 9 to 5. Any problems with raising children and family stuff like that.

I am still young (24) and dont plan to get married yet,but one day i will start a family and i am not sure how will future misses "dude" deal with that. BTW sorry for bad english

Dude, if you find a cool chick who respects you and what you do (as well as you her), you shouldnt have a hard time handling a relationship. If you plan on being gone often, away on tour, or out late at gigs and such on a regular basis, you may want to consider a woman who is independent and secure with herself to be a priority, someone like that would probably be best at handling such situations. Be weary of falling for any insecure chicks who need you around all the time for their own comfort, they will not approve of your lifestyle, even if at first they seem to accept it, overtime their insecurities will cause you lots of problems.

Make sure that any prospective mate knows what she's getting herself into. I was a musician before I was in a relationship, and my girlfriend accepts that it's part of who I am.

If you're really lucky, you might even find yourself with another musician, maybe even another bassist.

Naturally, this all applies to either gender.

just find a good one, who has a life of her own,
with her own interests (obviously, if goals are: a stay at home mom who wants to make dinner for her man every night and be in bed by 9, it's not a good choice).
i've been married almost 7 years,
and home for maybe half that time.
no problems.
i'm sure flying her out to "meet" in other countries hasn't hurt...

After 12 years together, my wife is probably praying in secret every night that I make something of a musical career just so I'd go away every once in a while.
