pwned by ebay ...W.T.F can I do?

Sign in to disble this ad
so, I buy a lot of crap on ebay ...from all over the world ...constantly. For this particular transaction (not the latest, by the way) for some reason the ebay software decided to use one of the old addresses it had on file ...one which I have not used in over 3 years. Now, of course, one could argue that it's my fault for not checking the transaction details carefully ...but if you buy so much crap as I do, you only check the numbers because you have ALREADY selected your primary address and it has been in use for 3 years.

what are my options here? I contacted the buyer who of course says 'sorry, it was delivered ...this is where I get off' ...I sent a letter to the old address hoping there's someone living there and they didn't throw away the item. Or just accept that I've been ripped off of $50 by way of software errors from ebay.

Several times per year, usually with just T-Shirts, THANK GOD......I have people send payment via paypal with an old shipping address. The one thing that makes paypal usefull is being able to quickly print and pay for shipping labels using the customers info. I ALWAYS post reminders on our forum to UPDATE YOUR PAYPAL SHIPPING ADDRESSES

Ah I see. Over here, mostly the number comes with the house. I think that in theory you can keep your number, but I don't know anyone who has actually done it.

Can you look up the number for the house in a directory or anything?

Nope, if the shipper has confirmation it was delivered to the address you gave him. You are SOL.

Sorry. The seller, Paypal, Ebay, isn't responsible.

That's a lot of work for $50. Take the loss, unless $50 is a big hit on your pocketbook.

you don't understand I did NOT select that address and it is NOT my primary address ...the software can't just randomly select an address from my list, it's supposed to ALWAYS use the primary unless I change it, which I did NOT. ebay/paypal is to blame here (their software, really). As to whether they will admit it or not, that's a whole other story.

Not really, but I can't just sit back and do nothing about it on principle alone. I do not take being xxxxxx lightly.

No, but if you didn't take the OLD address off of ebay then it's not their fault, you said you have one residence, and it's the primary... Well if they have your old residence as a secondary, computer error or not, they are not responsible because you didn't take the old address off.

Most people over here tend to take their phone number with them when they move. As long as you are in the same area code obviously.

While you are working on evil bay, you could send a note to "current resident" at your old address. If the return address says "former resident" followed by your name, current address, etc., they may not toss it out as junk mail. If they are an honest lot, they may forward your item to you. I would.

Just a thought.

Really? How strange. I don't know anyone that has taken their number. Oh well.

I'm assuming most of the people you know who haven't are people moving between flats? If it is over a short term people dont tend to bother. But if you have lived in a place for say 10 years or so, then you move, people will more likely keep the number. Just down to the individuals really. If you ever want to just call up BT.

Is your old place very far from where you live now?

not at all, but it's inconvenient enough that I can't just drop by and see if there's somebody home. I sent them a letter with my phone number, let's see what happens. I don't expect them to take the expense of sending it to me, I would pick it up, of course.

Problem is, it was a huge apartment building and the unit may very well be vacant right now If I don't hear back in a week or so I'll call the management office, maybe they kept it around.

well the software was faulty but there is a reason that you are supposed to check the shipment details before confirming, in case of computer error. e-bay would probably tell you this, pay pal would probably tell you this and therefore i am afraid to say you are, in fact, to blame.
