How do you go about keeping your groups topics new and fresh?

I think starting each session with, "tried any good new drugs lately?" is probably a bad idea.

It must be interesting to work on that side of things. When I was in college and vounteering at the rehab center I worked in admittance which meant I saw people at their absolute lowest point and didn't have much interaction with them if and when they turned their lives around.

It's definitely hard, especially if the people are the same, and they're not giving a lot back. I mostly do vocational placement for mentally ill or substance abusers, but I do weekly groups, and it's hard to stay fresh.
