Question regarding contract

Sign in to disble this ad
Some of you may have read my thread about the trouble I had with my roommates. Everyone suggested I move out. But the problem is that I signed a contract until April of 2010.

However, the house has been sold. We've received a letter saying that the house has been sold and that we have to sign a new contract, and make new cheques to the new landlord's name.

So my question is: do I have to sign the contract? Or am I allowed to not sign the contract and move out of here.

Thanks,

Laws vary. Check your original contract for wording that binds you to the lease regardless of ownership.

+1

Bring your original contract to a lawyer. There might be a clause that extends your lease to a new owner, or there might be a clause that says if the house is sold, your lease is automatically terminated.

I've read the original contract and it does say - TO HOLD... for one year. (I don't have it anymore).

However, by reading the original contract, I noticed that I have never signed it. I wasn't here when the contract was made, and was supposed to sign it upon my arrival but the landlord never did anything about it...

So my name is in the "agreement" section (because I asked one of the roommates to put it) but my signature is not there.

So am I safe ?

Google something like "Thunder Bay tenant law". In the US these laws vary from city to city and where you live can make all the difference. You need the rules for exactly where you live.

Well since they want to make you sign a new contract one would assume that the old contract is no longer valid or else they would wait until april to make you sign it.
