Question regarding payment for gear

Sign in to disble this ad
I placed an ad in Craigslist last month for some gear and got a response from someone in London. He wrote via email that he will be sending payment so that I can hold the item for him.
I then received an email from him saying that "his associate" accidently put the wrong checks in the mail to me and that I should cash them, take out the money for the gear and send the remainder back to him. The item was for $500. Yesterday, I received three International Money Orders for $962 each.

My son thinks that this is a scam but the money orders look real. The person has been emailing me asking if I had gotten the checks....

Scam...I've heard of this particular one. Can't quite remember how it works, but it's a scam, for sure

My brother got the same thing in the mail a while ago when he was selling his PS3, back when it was first released. He threw them away and ended up keeping the PS3.

Yea, when you cash a money order like that at a bank, that is IF the bank cashes them, it's cashed against one of your bank accounts, so if the money order ends up being bogus, which it usually is, you end up having to pay back the amount you cashed plus fees.

Or at least I think that's how it works.

email him back saying you're broke and need ten bucks paypaled to take the train to the big city where you can deposit his checks and wire the rest back. Make out he's being very trusting as you could just keep all the money, why not just post him his checks back, yada yada..
