questions about computer monitors

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for an external monitor for my macbook.

I'm thinking about this one:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...&lang=en&cc=us

One thing I like about this one, is the fact that you can turn it 90°

It received a few good reviews. In the midrange price it seem to be a good one.

My question is, since I'm not watching movies or do any picture editing, should I buy a good monitor or should I just buy the cheapest one?
It will be for internet, some audio editing, and other light stuff.

Also, I really don't need a wide screen. I really don't know why 4:3 computer monitor are not available anymore!

Thank you for yur advice.

I'm looking through that exact screen right now!

Its been pretty good to me so far, the wide screen and the size impressed me when I first got it. Ask me anything, but I haven't really used it to its full potential yet, as this computer sucks.

HP makes a lot of monitors with glossy screens rather than matte screens. They really make the colors pop but having looked at and considered one in person I decided against it because of the extreme glare that showed up on the glossy screen. If this is one of those glossy screens I would pass on it personally..it was just too annoying. If it's not then I don't see why not. I ended up with a 22" Samsung and it's fantastic.

If you're looking for something low cost and don't need it to be the best then look at Acer LCD monitors. They make pretty good budget monitors.

There's no glare for me right now except for on those black edges, of course. Hell, I just shined a flash light on the screen and could barely see the light. I do see glare from the window on the side of my house if I look at an angle though. Its nothing to be worried about.

Once you go wide, you never go back.

I have a Samsung 226CW and I love it. Samsung makes some of the best LCD displays.

The panels come from a couple of manufacturers anyways. There are some differences between the different panel types, but I don't know if that matters if you don't do anything professional stuff, so I suppose a cheap LCD wouldn't be too bad. However, do consider what the monitor looks on your desk - you'd think the appearance doesn't matter, but if it already looks like a boxy old thing from 90's when you get it, you are going to want to replace it pretty soon.

Acer has the cheapest stuff around, but they seem to last pretty well for budget stuff. My friend still has his 15" Acer LCD that's about 5 years old, and it's still running. HP is in the same class, I've never heard that apart from feeling a bit cheap there would be anything wrong with the products. They just came out with a cheap 24" with DVI connection et al, if you're interested in something a bit larger. If you want quality, Samsung is probably the biggest "quality" manufacturer.

Do you have any particular hatred for widescreen? IME it's a superior shape all around (it approximates the golden ratio, you know ).

+1 On Samsung making good monitors. I've got a 19" that I've had for about 2 years, and a 22" that I've had for a year, and they're both great.

Which 22" (and larger) monitors use glossy screens? I love the glossy 17" screen on my Gateway laptop. The colors/contrast just look sick!
