Awww man. I'm old enough to have seen Bubba play a few times on TV, the guy was a beast. 66 is young, but NFL linemen do take a beating. RIP.

Very sad news. The thought of being a kid watching Bubba doing TV ads during NFL games in the 70s brought back some memories. The first thing that popped into my head was this:

‪Miller Lite, 1977 11 20, Bubba Smith‬‏ - YouTube

Then this:

‪Miller Lite, 1979 11 18, Bubba Smith and Dick Butkus tennis‬‏ - YouTube

RIP Bubba.

He was truly a game changer in the NFL. He actually changed what scouts look for in a pass rushing DE (height). Before Bubba, most DE's were built like tackles but faster. Now scouts look for that tall guy that can deflect passes. In college at MSU he was truly dominant player on the same D with and played in one of the most memorable games in college history a 10-10 tie with Notre Dame in 66 for the National title. Many commentators still refer to it as the "Game of the Century"

1966 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That MSU team also had George Webster (one of the all time great LB) and 4 of the top 8 picks in the NFL draft were from that team (Bubba was # 1 overall)
