R.I.P. Guitar Hero

Activision officially annouced the death of the Guitar hero franchise yesterday. For what it's worth, my kids and I loved playing it, and it got them listening to music that I grew up listening to.

I've heard some musicians hate on it, and others love it because of their love of music.

Is anyone else saddened by the announcement?

I liked the original three games they came out with, but after that it got ridiculous with the number of games they were producing each year. I can't say I'll miss it too much.

I just hope Activision and TreyArch finally do the same with the Call of Duty franchise

The reason Activision gave was licensing costs, so it seems to me that regardless of the company or the game, the licensing of the music will stop any more games like this from coming out.

My 2 cents anyway.

From the cnnmoney.com article:

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The stock price for Activision Blizzard hit a sour note Thursday, the day after the video game company said it was abandoning "Guitar Hero" and focusing on battle games such as "Call of Duty."

Sorry.

Saddened? Hells no! I heard this yesterday and did a little dance. Lets celebrate! Parents will buy they're kids real instruments! There will still be great music when I'm too old to play. Long live Rock & Roll! Guitar hero has been sent to hell!

That's a shame. I wonder when people will wise up and realize that they've bought the same game three times in a row now.

It's worked for Madden for over 10 years.

As a private music teacher with 20 guitar/bass students, Guitar Hero helped educate and motivate young people to play some of the greatest pop music. Kids who would otherwise think Billy Joe Armstrong was a great guitar player learned differently because of Guitar Hero, and provided me a steady roster of hungry, motivated students.

I think Rock Band will still serve that purpose.

I'm not going to miss it, it just wasn't the real thing. But like electracoyote said it did motivate some people to play a real instrument. I have some friends who started to play guitar because of Guitar Hero so its not to bad. Just not my cup of tea.

It was definitely a fun series. I can't even comprehend getting into music because of it, though. That's just not part of my wavelength.

The first 3 were great, after that the series got alienating, not everyone wants to pay money to play 20 Van Halen songs.

And nothing of value was lost. Maybe kids will be willing to pick up real instruments now.

i read recently that a company was coming out with a new GH like game with a controller and game play that was much more like chording on a guitar. They were hoping it would teach kids to actually play.

While I don't like it, I thought GH was still popular. I'm surprised.

I tried it once and immediately hated it. It's almost insulting when, a song you can play in your sleep on a real guitar, is extremely hard to play with a game controller.

I play GH and RB because I am not good at playing on real instruments. If they turn these games into almost the real thing that requires musical ability, I'm hosed.
