R.I.P. Huell Howser

I don't know how many people outside of California and Memphis know who Huell is. He was lampooned in the Simpsons as Howell Huser! Rest in peace!

I hear his final words were "That's Amaaaazing!"

RIP California's Gold!

elgecko 01-07-2013 03:11 PM

I'm sure he'll find the afterlife ammmaaaaaaazing!

Wow! Ya know...I always found him kinda annoying, but I found myself brought to tears at his death. Never knew Huell Howser meant that much to me

macaroni tony 01-07-2013 03:45 PM

I don't know if it was meant to be funny or not, but this tidbit from the article I found hilarious

Often, he wore shorts.
That's what it should say on his headstone :)

Munjibunga 01-07-2013 03:56 PM

Total bummer. I really liked him.

Ben B 01-07-2013 03:56 PM

That's sad. I enjoyed California's Gold.

Bassamatic 01-07-2013 04:01 PM

Oh - that is surprising and sad! :crying:

He provided many enjoyable hours enlightening me about my home town and state! I even met him once at a coffee place in Hollywood, and he was a very nice and cool guy - just like on his show. Real down to earth. DANG! It's also kinda scary since we were the same age.

Well, his shows will go one forever - his and Howell Heuser's ;)

I will always be able to remember how him would close with "California's GOWLD" in his accent.

I want to watch that episode so bad now. If I remember correctly, he declared Springfield the worst town he'd ever been to and gave it the lowest rating he'd ever given, three stars out of five! :)

LOL! He would...

Bassamatic 01-07-2013 05:37 PM

And - if you remember, he rode into Springfield on a Turnip truck!

elgecko 01-07-2013 05:40 PM

:D

Matt Groening was apparently a big fan!

I imagine that Dana Gould and Adam Carolla will do a fitting tribute to him. Their "Huell's Jewels" segment on Adam's podcast is usually the funniest thing on the show all year.

That's very sad.

Huell Howser tripping!

The NPR remembrance of him described his "endless enthusiasm" for the topics he covered.

While I didn't watch his show with regularity, I would often force others to watch it when I controlled the remote. Disappointed that I won't be able to continue that tradition.

Willicious 01-08-2013 05:56 PM

genuinely bummed to hear this.
had never heard of him until i moved to l.a. to attend school, then found myself watching his show regularly.
i would always get the huell howser dog when i hit pink's at 2am. the best!

People I know always get his name wrong, and say Howell Huser.:hyper:

Adam Carolla fans knew Huell Howser well.

I remember him from my childhood, he started here in Middle Tennessee, he was from Gallatin, just north of Nashville. He was the most friendly ambassador from Tennessee, sometimes I was embarrassed by his country, folksy style. Then I realized that he was so genuine that although he was a bit goofy and loud, he was real, and laughed right along with you. He was a good man. Thank you Californians for taking him in, we are glad that you liked him too.

He was cool! Met him few years ago, real nice guy. Loved California's Gold.
