Rant: Phrases that burn you up!

Sign in to disble this ad
This is an example of a phrase in common usage that burns me up to no end:

Lance Armstrong announced today that he is returning to competitive racing next year. He'll be competing in the Tour De France to "raise awareness of cancer".

RAISE AWARENESS? I simply detest that phrase and Lance's use of it.

Look, Lance, if you want to raise awareness of cancer then why don't you go race on Alpha Centauri? I'm sure the aliens there are completely unaware of cancer. And I'm sure every human on this planet is aware of a thing called cancer, some painfully so. I know I am, I lost my Dad to bone cancer back in 1989.

End of rant.

"Net net", "vis-a vis", "sweetspot" and my newest current favorite.... let me "reach out" to him/her.

All in the context of a business discussion of course!

"I know, right?"

I'm not entirely sure why, but every time I hear someone say this, I want to punch them.

I hate it when people say something "burns them up". I mean, what do they really know about being consumed by fire.

I do not like the phrase "Maybe some other time." My mom used to say it alot in my childhood, and when i was about 7, i got fed up and told her that i hated her use of it. I said something along the lines of "That's Donkey feces! You never say when the other time is gonna be, and you usually don't care." Thus she doesn't use it.

My girlfriends use of it when were to drive up to knob and watch the sunset, but got derailed by her aunts miniscule and idiotic small dog being loose made me want to scream very nasty things, but i didn't.

Seriously, that phrase pisses me off.

"comfort level"

This (oddly enough) from "Technical" Directors who have little
to no Technical background whatsoever (but by golly they
shattered that glass ceiling, now didn't they?).

"Yes, this works" or "No this doesn't work and here are the
reasons why..." isn't good enough anymore. "You have
to make me feel good about this" ('...and I'll only get
mad if you start throwing those pesky facts at me') .

When I ask to sing my new song before the last set, get told "OK", and we don't do it, then afterwards I get told "we ran out of time". BS!! We had a whole set worth of time!

I can't stand the over use of the word "epic". "That party was Epic!" is one that I hear a lot. NO, the party was not epic, and you wouldn't know, you were passed out for half of it anyway.

when people refer to entire racial groups collectively as one person.

"The White man", "The Black man", etc...
