Rays v. Phillies

Make predictions - before the games start is preferred.

The title of the thread is intentional - no need to dangle red meat in front of our non-North American (mostly British, but assorted other Euros chime in) friends who have trouble with the concept of baseball's championship being called the WORLD SERIES.

I'm a Sox (errr, make that Red Sox, don't want to offend my friends in Chicago) fan. But also a fan of good baseball, good baseball teams and good baseball chat.

The Rays are for real; they have been since April. They were the best team in the American League this year and they did something that the '04 Yankees and '07 Indians failed to do - finish off the Red Sox after leading 3-1 in games. I am confident that they will represent the junior circuit well. So well, in fact that the WORLD SERIES trophy will remain in the custody of the American League East for another year.

Rays in 5. (I wouldn't mind seeing Garza get lit up - he is a punk, a punk with talent, but a punk nonetheless, puncture the veneer of confidence and he'll implode)

Starting pitching is very strong. And when they throw that kid Price out there, the relief isn't bad either.

this is gonna be the more boring world series ever.

but if i were to have a team win, it would be the Rays to sweep. If the Bosox are gonna lose, might as well be to the WS champs.

besides, what a great story and opportunity for a hard-working and talented young team.

It has been a bit of a dry spell in all the major sports for Philadelphia. Even when the Red Sox were in an 86 year funk and the Patriots hadn't drafted a QB from Michigan in the sixth round - we had the Celtics and for a few years the Bruins to tide us over.

Not trying to be a wiseguy but when was the last Philly championship in anything?

For that matter, when was the last Tampa championship?

I'm not so sure - people eat up the whole David-Goliath thing although truth be told, as a Red Sox fan, I'm not sure I like being Goliath, no one loves Goliath, except maybe his Moms, and she could be pulling his chain, too.

I don't know much about the Phillies except that they play in an extremely nice and extremently small ballpark.

The Phills are a reasonably large market team with a $98 million dollar payroll; more than twice that of the $42 million dollar Rays.

Do you see the Phils going up by 2 or 3 games, then losing in a 7th game? My friends in New York and Cleveland tell me that is an especially bad way to lose.

I'm with you on the "if the Rays sweep, that means the Red Sox are the second best team in baseball" bandwagon. The Rays certainly have the talent and the pitching to do that, but I don't like the idea that that would put them in the same category as the '04 or '07 Red Sox.

GO PHILS (for one game at least )

Tampa has had a NFL and NHL title in the past 5-6 years, if I'm not mistaken.

The Rays themselves has been in the league for only 10 years - and they've already made the series. Some teams ::cough:: Chicago Cubs ::cough :: can't do it over several decades.

I heard they're doing the national anthem to open the Series

Rays in 6...Tampa once again smacks Philly around, just like the Bucs did to the Eagles a few years back

I can't agree. I think it's an even match between those 2 events.

It looks like Philly has the "we're due" argument locked up.

The Rays have gotten to the World Series quickly, not as quickly as Boston (then known as the Americans) did after only their 3rd year in the very first World Series.

Then again, the Cubs won the first National League Championship back in 1876 and they were the first to repeat as World Series Champions back in 1907 and 1908. But I see your point, that was a while ago -

LOL!!!!!

Nice to see that the Rays have put the Red Sox back into their place - also-rans.

The Rays are a great story and I may be the only baseball fan who actually likes their wierd catwalked stadium.

I'm a Phillies fan so I have to predict the Phillies will win. Phillies in 6. The Rays have been great, but the Phils will with the series on the strength of their bullpen, which is the best in baseball, and the relative weakness of the Rays' bullpen in comparsison. The Rays pen is good, don't get me wrong, but it definitely showed serious weakness in the ALCS.

The real pathetic thing is that the Rays have been in the league 10 years - the Phillies are one of the oldest teams, starting in the 1890s? If the Rays win, then both teams will have the same number of World Series crowns in their histories.

Also-rans! That hurts, especially coming from a guy supporting a team with the most losses in major league history - 10,098 and counting .

The Phillies started at the bottom and have been looking up ever since. In 1883, their inaugural season, they finished 8th in an 8-team league - 46 games behind the Boston Beaneaters (the original Gas House Gang??.)

The Phillies are a team of destiny this year.
Philadelphia had a championship team in 2008. Ron Jaworski & Jon Bon Jovi's AFL Philadelphia Soul.

I'm a Yankees fan that lives in the Tampa Bay area. So since the Rays are my home town team, I'm rooting for them.

The Rays have been playing hard all season and have something to prove in baseball. If they play in the series with the same intensity that they have been all season, then I believe they will win.

Well, the Red Sox won the '07 World Series and the Celtics won the NBA championship of the '07-'08 season, (we will not speak of the NFL ) so I guess a double championship for Philadelphia is not out of the question.

BTW, what is the AFL?

I agree with your prediction but I am also interested in your thoughts about the chances that the Rays can build up their fan base. I could see how it would be hard for someone like yourself whose main rooting interest is in the same division; but do the Rays pick up fans who may have moved to Tampa/St. Pete from National League cities or AL Central or AL West cities?

Are native Floridians starting to embrace the team? What more do they have to do to get fannies in the seats and eyeballs watching their telecasts?
