The "real" Ben Franklin?

There's been some interesting programs on the History Channel recently about Benjamin Franklin, and the things he was involved in that aren't as celebrated in history as others. It's really intriguing stuff for a history geek like myself.

There's about a thousands biographies of him out there, does anyone know of one that covers some of the more seedy, less mentioned stuff about his life?

I saw on the History channel that rather than the Eagle, Franklin wanted the Wild Turkey to be the national bird of the US. I think he also had some ties to the Illuminati.
