Yes, it's real. The US Army has been working on the design since the mid 1990s. According to my Nephew (Marines), they are expected to be fully online within the next year or so.

I bet the injured and handicapped could really benefit from that technology.

Pretty cool stuff

Looks like they have used some similar tech in the middle east already:

I thought the article was real, and then I saw the little pop-up saying "Has godlessness truly 'DOOMED' Great Britain?"

I don't think this will be used. I have done 4 tours and have seen a lot of gadgets, from the new assault rifles to vehicles. The big brains have been trying to come up with something like this that would help soldiers carry stuff for ages. It took the military decades just to change the style of combat boot so soldiers feet wouldn't wear out. The cost is going to crush this, at least for wide spread usage for ground troops. Things are winding down, so getting the contract for mass production of this product will most likely fail.

Pretty cool, but I know I wouldn't want it in combat.

One of the lectures at my uni was (apparently) working on a project similar to this. Could've even been this one.

Future is now?

It's 2011 for Christ's sake. We should have flying cars and ended poverty by now... No wars too...

I'm surfing the web and typing this reply from my phone, smartphones are literally straight out of Star Trek, except this can probably do more than their tricorders. If someone could make money off ending poverty and flying cars they definitely would.
