I saw a commercial for this movie last night. Is it a joke, or an actual movie?

I can hear the dialogue now:
"G7......"
"SUCKS".

I saw the previews to "Battleship" and it looked sort alike "Battle:LA" on water.
Please dont tell me that it's somehow based on the game?? Or am I totally misreading your post?

Or call the game the movie's "muse" if you must, but yes. there is an undeniable tie in at its origin.

Battleship looks alright to me but them making Real Steel a serious story looks... ridiculous. At best it could've been like something Disney would've done.

Sex in the City may not have appealed to my sensibilities, but clearly it had a following prior to going to the big screen. Real Steal looks like it's one part Over the Top, one part Transformers, all tied together with the the plot that could have only come from a children's toy from decades past. I don't often openly encourage assassinations, but desperately insulting movies call for desperate measures.

It looks like a mashup of the lame romance of Armageddon (rogue-ish hot shot bad-boy naval dudester wants to date the general's daughter) mixed with Battle:LA as Relic suggested, and some other lame ID:4 crap....I was going into this with the question "ok, well..it's got aliens. But how are they gonna address the whole "shooting blind" aspect of the game? EASY! The Aliens, as shown, project a forcefield dome over their vicinity rendering our sonar and navigation / targeting useless...
THAT IS JUST SO LAME. There's the end of the movie. They make the forcefield, then obliterate our ships, movie over. But no, it's gonna be some inane plotpoint that Liam Neeson and crew will cunningly overcome.
I always wanted better for Liam. Then he did Taken. And then he did A Team. Then he released the Krappen.
Now this.
It'll be #1 for 3 weeks.

After movies like Joe Dirt, I believe that there is any audience for any movie, no matter how inane and stupid.
