so my brother, who is riding in a 1991 corolla, is finally ready to part with his POS. If it was me, i would recomend him an 87 volvo . But he isnt as mechanically inclined as me. We're looking for a solid car in the $15k range, that is good. please nothing past 20k new. He wants new, i suggest used, but its his descison. |

I like Acura TL's. Older (~2001 and later) models go for about $10K. I don't know the numbers for sure, but my brother got an '01 in great shape for $10K. I just love their style, not too flashy but certainly nothing ugly. From my experience Acura's are pretty reliable, they're owned by Honda.

When we bought our 4 door Honda Civic, 18 mos. ago, Honda was the only manufacturer that CR recommended every single model in the lineup (from the teensy to SUV). We've been changing oil, rotating & airing the tires. It's soooo boring!

Although I have no idea what they cost in the States, but it was around 19k new here in Canada. Cars are generally more expensive here. Really comfortable to sit in, fun to drive and it can fit a bunch of gear.

Yes ... it's boring, but it is solid transportation and value. If your brother is in the city itself and does not have a parking spot, buy used and small. Chicago street parking will beat the crap out of a car in a short period of time. Quote:

And I certainly wouldn't pay $10k for a nearly 10 year old car.
To the OP- buy the newest car you can afford. No sense in buying someone's old headache. |

Used? Go with something German or Japanese I'd say. Audis are good bets for anything requiring long distance travel. Same with Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, etc. The Audi A6 and Infiniti G35 are great choices for that.

Define parameters of "good".
Cargo capacity?
Seating capacity?
Towing?
Age range?
Acceptable mileage?
Color?
Style?
Vehicle type?
And any other 10+ things you can define....

-used Infiniti M45 or Q45 if you can afford the gas consumption (although from what I heard for V8 powered cars they are economical). Also, if you get the Q45, people might think you are in the Yakuza . But they are damn comfortable.
-used Volvo V70. Even better would be the V90 but that's older.

Top gear reviewed the UK version of that car a while ago. So the 2011 model (possibly the 2010 model) might not have been the one they reviewed.
