Hello all,

I like Brown ales a lot. Newcastle has always been a favorite of mine, but for some reason, it's been tasting bland lately. It's just a faint taste of what I remember it tasting like, but mostly carbonation--like if you added a coors light to a newcastle. My girlfriend feels the same way--she used to share my love of newcastle, but she can barely even drink it anymore for the same reason. Anyways, I feel like i remember newcastle having a stronger caramel/hazelnut flavor. Did newcastle change up their recipe? Well, in any case, I don't expect newcastle to taste the same and I want to find the flavor I am thinking of lol Is there a nut brown that you folks know of that has a stronger caramel/nutty flavor? should I just add a little amaretto to my newcastle? Am I am an alcoholic?

+1 on the Rogue. I never met a Rouge beer or ale that I didn't like. And I'm an admitted beer snob.

Newcastle was the first decent beer I ever liked. I avoid it at all costs these days. After a while it started tasting like iron and blood. I havent enjoyed a Newcastle in years.

I did, however, recently try a really good brown ale. Its made by Karl Strauss, and its called Fullsuit Brown Ale.

that puts a groteque situation in my head where an unfortunate repairman had an accident in the fermenting tank! gross! but it also reminds me of a joke:

Brenda is home as usual, making dinner, when Tim arrives at her door. "Brenda, may I come in?" he asks.
"I've somethin' to tell ya."
"Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's my husband?"
"That's what I'm here to be tellin' ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..."
"Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me..."
"I must, Brenda. Your husband Bill is dead and gone. I'm sorry."
Brenda reached a hand out to her side, found the arm of the rocking chair by the fireplace, pulled the chair to her and collapsed into it. She wept for many minutes. Finally she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?"
"It was terrible, Brenda. Bill fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned."
"Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?"
"Well, Brenda... no."
"No?"
"Fact is, he got out three times to pee."

I will have to check to see where i can get that fullsuit brown ale--thanks for the recomendation!

Fullers are always good - take your pick!

London Pride would be a good place to start if you enjoy the Newky.

not sure if they export to the US, actually... hmm.

EDIT apparently they do, through DBI, whoever that is

Fuller's London Porter is by far one of my favourite beers. And this is coming from someone who drinks primarily microbrews. That beer is just THAT good.

I can get Fullers ESB, London Price and London Porter on tap locally but I don't think any of these are a nut brown. Lost Coast's Down Town Brown is readily available around here and I prefer that to Newcastle.

i think you're right, they don't seem to do a tagged 'brown' ale. Mind you, taste wise i always think of Pride as being similar to Newky, i may be very wrong...

He said 'hopefully' nut brown ale content. Not 'only'

Two nice Canadian nut browns are Amsterdam Nut Brown and Hockley Dark. Hockley especially makes some really great stuff.

+1, like this one very much. I had a really good one recently at a place near me, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was and their tap list changes weekly, so it's already gone. If I can find it, I'll let you know.

ArrogantBastard.com

from the product description:

This is an aggressive ale. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory–maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beverage will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make things taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

At Stone Brewing, we believe that pandering to the lowest common denominator represents the height of tyranny - a virtual form of keeping the consumer barefoot and stupid. Brought forth upon an unsuspecting public in 1997, Arrogant Bastard Ale openly challenged the tyrannical overlords who were brazenly attempting to keep Americans chained in the shackles of poor taste. As the progenitor of its style, Arrogant Bastard Ale has reveled in its unprecedented and uncompromising celebration of intensity. There have been many nods to Arrogant Bastard Ale…even outright attempts to copy it… but only one can ever embody the true nature of liquid Arrogance!

A wee plug for the new McCashin's line. They sold their old "Macs" name to the corporates but kept their brewery in Stoke. Ten years restraint of trade is now over and they have cranked it back up.

It was always a mass produced product but a step up from corporate dishwash. Years ago I was wondering why the Macs didn't taste so fine and stopped buying it.

The new McCashins stuff is heaps better than their old brews. They really nailed it.
