Yeah, I wanna get one, but I'm hoping someone here knows of a decent one that won't break the bank.

Dont need to buy one. Get on your scale while holding your bass, then get on without. Subtract your weight without, and thats how much the bass weighs

Also, bathroom scales are notoriously inaccurate, and anyone who wants to know the weight of a bass usually wants to know something more specific than "between 9 and 10 pounds on my bathroom scale".

I picked up a decent digital shipping scale at Officemax or Office Depot or w/ever, it weighs in 1/4 lb. increments, and it's accurate (I tested it with known weights). Cost around $80. Be sure to get one with a large flat platform, a bass will just fall off the small ones.

I bought a new digital scale a few years back for €19,90. It wasn't the best brand and it hasn't always worked properly, but it gives quite accurate and repeatable results (0,1 kg precision). I'd buy one of those and use the method WickedPissah described. I use that method to weigh my cat, she weighs 5,2 kg. It showed 5,2 kg yesterday when she sat on it too.

The trick is getting something thats accurate between 5-20 pounds. Why not get a fish scale. You could tie a string around the headstock then hook it on the scale. I dont see a need for a digital scale unless you need to be super accurate.

About three years ago I bought a digital postage scale on Ebay - cost me less than $30 and it has been extremely handy. It's a DigiWeigh brand, made in China, but it's accurate and has a scale area about 6" x 10". (Note: when I tried going to their website Digiweighusa.com, I got a Google warning that the site might harm my computer.) It has quite a lot of capacity - I've weighed objects up to 60 pounds on it, and it's accurate to within an ounce.

The picture in this auction shows the exact scale I have:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-POSTAGE-RATE...QQcmdZViewItem

Evidently this is a standard brand that makes a bunch of different scales. I searched Ebay and found a number of Digiweigh scales, including at least one postage scale that's currently at $24.99 and has a 76 pound capacity. Due to my positive experience with this brand, I think it's worth considering.

A digital scale is better if it has these helpful features:
- You should have a TARE function: this allows you to zero it with weight already on the scale (perhaps packaging), so that you can add weight and get an accurate reading.
- You should be able to press a HOLD button and hold the reading in case the object you're weighing blocks your view of the readout.

You don't need anything very big - look for a digital scale that has enough surface area that you can stand the end of a bass on it. You'll also find it's handy for postage and for Ebay sales if you're into that gig.
