Hey,
I have had a Dell XPS M1530 for about five years. It's time to get a new laptop and I was wondering if you all had any suggestions.
I don't do online gaming anymore, but am looking for something that can hold music, make music. Pictures, the whole nine yards.
I have about 500.00 I can spend. I do like PC, so you apple folks please don't flame me lol.
I went to Best Buy, and the HP caught my eye. Cant remember the model however. He suggested a Samsung, do you all have any experience with that? |

Or I could just save the money and get a pedal or two, or three. Guess it is a whole want vs need thing... |

Asus has the best reliability ratings. |

When I went into Best Buy, they seemed more interested in selling me a service plan. That is a whole other thread right there however.
Being in the Navy, I would like a reliable one to take with me on deployments. |

I personally do like using Dell products, but I will resound the sentiments that HP reliability is poor. Toshiba, on the other hand, gets pretty good marks, and Gateway has improved lately too.
Good luck on your purchase, be sure to UPDATE!!!
I'd personally suggest buying through NewEgg.com ....they're awesome.

NewEgg has treated me well.
Note that you might be able to get a few more years of life out of your existing laptop by installing a flavor of Linux such as Linux Mint. This isn't to push you towards Linux, but is just an idea if money is tight. |

I use Apple Macs since 1985. Lots of gigs and bites. OS X (Unix) operating system. Virtually Virus free, very stable. You can install/run WIN-OSs too. Cool looks. State of the art hard- and software, peripherals: iPod, iPad, iPhone. All under one hood.

They get decent components for the money but they aren't built very well (IMO) on the other hand with our production company between Sony's, Toshiba's, Dell's, and HPs, the dell has outlasted all. I'd highly recommend a Dell or cheaper Sony Vaio. Lets put it this way. We bought an HP with an outboard ATI graphics cars and the drivers for the card weren't installed and the ones for the ONBOARD Intel one were.... The ATI drivers weren't even on the hard drive we had to get the model number and really download them. Like I said IMO. Good luck with your purchase! |

Every HP I've seen (friends and family) have been this way, so I'd HIGHLY advise avoiding them like the plague. I'd second the opinion(s) of getting a Dell or Toshiba laptop, good quality..esp. for the money. Fujitsu also makes a decent rig, and some people on here have been saying that Lenovo laptops are pretty gravy as well.

Sounds like Asus is the logical choice (or not depending how you look at it) |

I've always had great luck with Gateway (even though many others hate Gateway). Asus seems to be great stuff as well. I had an Asus netbook that was built like a little tank!
My tops would be Gateway and probably Asus. My "not a chance" picks would be HP and Compaq.
