For an underappreciated, little known comedy, try Top Secret.
Some of my favorites from the 80's:
Airplane!
Top Gun
The Breakfast Club
Revenge of the Nerds
Blazing Saddles
Howard the Duck (not really)
Spies Like Us
Stripes
Uncle Buck
War Games
Tron
Any of the Indiana Jones movies
Spaceballs
I guess I like comedy. Hmmm.

80's? Classics?? My god I'm so old. ≈8^{

Could you give us an idea of style? Maybe tell us one or two that you already consider "classic" American? Foreign?

Oh, I didn't know that was criteria...but since you haven't seen Toxic Avenger, you NEED to review the entire Troma catalogue.

Swamp Thing. amazing stuff.

OMG! You need to see Airplane! if you like comedies. It is probably my all time favorite comedy. Lot's of little hidden gems throughout the movie. I see something new every time I watch it.

You can't go wrong with the John Hughes stuff.
Good call on Red Dawn and Ferris Beuller.
Back to School is a good one, too (nice little part by Sam Kinison).
Oh, damn, I almost forgot! Caddyshack. Classic.

They're actually doing a remake of that one. This time is supposedly set in the Detroit area and the "bad guys" are the Chinese... sounds like they're going to screw up another classic but we'll see...

yeah, even if you don't see any of those other ones, Airplane is a must. It's mandatory for the completion of your manhood.
