Recommend me some red wine?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to visit a friend, and I feel like it's appropriate to bring some good wine red for her and her family. Their family is Italian so they know wine and therefore I don't want to just buy anything. Can anyone recommend some good red wine on the cheaper end of the spectrum?

For now, there's a Smoking Loon Syrah(not her fave), a Muriel Rioja & a Finca LaLande Malbec.

if you can find it, corvo red table wine is cheap and yummy and italian. $15 will get you a decent chianti. but, if they really "know wine" (i hope that's not just some stereotype, cause i know wine alright, but i really know beer, despite my heritage) then maybe you wanna move away from italian wines assuming they already know them well.

for $20 you can get a nice red zinfandel. delicious, rich wine. ravenswood makes a good one (not the vinters blend, i think its called reserve). and good deals can be found with australian wines; they are still undervalued in this country.

Well this isn't necessarily cheap but I don't think you'll be able to find anything impressive for cheap. Arizona Stronghold Nachise:

The Maynard connection aside it's a really good boutique wine from Arizona which has a climate and geography similar to the Mediterranean (of course it has it's own characteristics that are different from the Med). Compared to cheaper and bigger vineyards and wineries (Napa Valley), the Arizona Stronghold and Caduceus wines just have a much more quality taste and feel to them.

Good luck finding it though.

If they are Italian just go down the wine isle and pick up something that is from Italy.

actually, your best bet may simply be to go to your local wine store (not super market - dedicated wine store) and ask for assistance. tell them your situation and your budget. trying to find a specific label based on our recommendations will be tougher then working with the choices on the shelf.

I would have to recommend Black Opal... either shiraz or cabernet sauvignon.

$15 and under is cheap for me. $15 - $25 is okay. Anything over $25 is a no go. There's a big wine library very close to me, but I want to have some idea of what I want to buy before I ask for their help blindly.

Obvious post

YouTube - ‪UB40 - Red Red Wine‬‏

More serious post.

The Yellow Tail Shiraz-Grenache is a nice med-price semi-sweet red, lighter in color, nice bouquet. My go-to for a dinner / after dinner social wine.

I'm no connoiseur by any stretch, but this stuff is delicious. 15-19 bucks a bottle, readily and widely available...rarely a time I cannot find it in a pinch.

Catena Malbec. Argentinean and Chilean wines are the best bang for the buck.

QFT.

If I'm taking to a dinner or as a gift where I really don't know much about the preferences of those I'm visiting, I like to take Italo Cescon. Their reds tend to be a bit more intense than their whites, as far as flavor goes, but they're still a good neutral base that should suite just about anyone. If they aren't crazy about the wine, it's at least a conversation piece because each bottle has a ribbon holding a piece of the same species of vine as the grapes used for that type of wine. At least that's what I've always been told. Even if the recipient doesn't like the flavor, relay that story and you'll at least get a "hey, that's neat!"

If you want to make an impression and not break the bank, try 1983 William Hill Gold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, about $35 but not your average Targetg grocery store brand. Most decent wine cellars will have 1 or 2 on hand.
