Recommend some colleges for my daughter

Sign in to disble this ad
My 17 yr old high school senior has high grades and SAT (1410), and is interested in a college that has a good biomed engineering program. Can someone recommend colleges to visit within a 6 hour drive of the mid-atlantic region?

6 hr drive from mid-atlantic gives you quite a selection. NYC, Boston, VA, DC, etc. Does she have any preferences as to location? Weather? Etc.?

She is kinda leaning towards a major city, maybe Boston. But no major geographic preference.

Not sure of the credibility of that site, but the names are ones you'll most likely recognize. Looking back, I should have probably gone this route (had the same high school credentials)...the med school route is much harder to enter than I expected.

UF, and their partnership with Shands teaching hospital, is top notch.

Stay away from Tulane. Not a good place. Lots of drinking, lots of drugs, lots of partying, not much learning.

not sure where 'mid-atlantic' refers to, but I've got to give the nod to my local guys...

http://biomedical.rutgers.edu/

My sister got her Mech Eng degree there, I should have but music got in the way.

I don't know about biomed specifically, but there are some outstanding engineering schools in that part of the country. I'm an alum of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA so I'm biased, but by most accounts it is one of the best engineering schools in the world. There's also RPI in upstate New York, WPI in Massachusetts, and of course MIT in Boston.

Good luck to your daughter! Sounds like she's off to a good start in life.

Rutgers is a solid choice for her. It s a state school with an outstanding reputation as a research university. With her SAT scores and HS grades, she is guaranteed a nice scholarship. I go there now, so if you have any particular questions feel free to ask.
Also, Johns Hopkins is one of the best schools around for BME. If she can get accepted and the cost for you is reasonable, I highly recommend it. Hopkins has always been my dream medical school.

Rutgers and Johns Hopkins are great recommendations. Also look into University of Pennsylvania. I'm not aware of biomed engineering specifically, but, given Penn's excellence in all things medical and its good engineering school, I'd be surprised if it weren't an excellent option.

for biomed i highly recommend the University of Washington in Seattle. My sister is there getting her phd in biomed engineering, and she turned down a full ride at MIT to go there!

Actually, a better approach to this would be to have all TalkBass members name the college(s) their son(s) will be attending... make a list (should be a short list... these are bass players' kids so even if they are lucky enough to have the brains... dad ain't gonna have the moola)... finally, send daughter to ANY college/university that is NOT on that list!!

You're welcome.

Penn State probably wouldn't be a bad choice, it's a pretty solid engineering school (civil here). Unfortunately its not really a city. I've just realized today after 4.5 years I am pretty bored of this place haha

My viewpoint from 30 years as a faculty and staff member at research universities: check the programs out, then apply at the ones that are the best fit.

I personally recommend public universities, as I think they give you a better bang for the buck - but not if you can line up scholarships at a private university. I am not an advocate of stacking up loans, and much prefer to stay in-state to reduce tuition.

If a public university in your home state has a good program GO THERE. You will get a solid education for half the price of going out-of-state, and your daughter can go elsewhere for a Master's in BioMed Eng when she's done. In that field, she's likely to want the Master's in any case.
