Reinstalled XP... now no Windows Updates....

Sign in to disble this ad
I was having trouble with my laptop. It was really slow and certain things weren't working (screensaver) so I reinstalled XP. It went really smoothly. After it was completed, I went to DL any updates, DP's Service Pack 3, IE7, some Security Updates, etc.

It was completed, one of the updates failed (I don't remember what it was) and I restarted the computer. I went to download the failed update and any other update and they failed.....

Now these updated that are failing are not showing the Microsoft site > Review your update history.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Was it .net framework by chance?

Reinstall the .net framework if so, you can just install over top of it.

Nino, here's my reply to this from another thread, I think this may be something to do with your issue. Read carefully, it's a bit complicated!

Quote:
If you've been running a machine with SP2 for a while and kept it regularly updated, then SP3 is just another routine update, really. I had a bit of hassle installing it through the online Windows update, though. So I downloaded the standalone SP3 installer and ran it separately, no problems whatsoever.

I've also just rebuilt software installations on two other machines, one which had an SP2 installation disk and one which went all the way back to SP1. The only issue there to be noted that SP3 does not include IE7 but IE6. So if you install SP3 (using the standalone mentioned above) on an IE6 machine and connect to Windows update, then the system will try to update IE7, realise it isn't there and you'll get messages saying that the updates (the IE7 ones) have failed.

So this is what I did...

For the SP2 installation: I set up XP SP2, installed IE7, then SP3. No issues with Windows update online having done that.

For the SP1 installation: set up XP SP1, installed SP3, then installed IE7 BEFORE going to the Windows update site. Again, no problem.

I should stress that this routine is only for fresh software builds from scratch using older XP disks. If you have a machine already running SP2 and IE7 and all the usual critical updates have been installed, then running SP3 should be a breeze (again, though, I'll mention that you might find the standalone installer - a big download, 300+ MB - a more reliable way of doing this than the online updates).

I hope that answers any questions you may have had.
Good luck!

OK.....So I should uninstall all the updates, SP3 and IE7 then reinstall IE7, SP3 then the updates?

That sounds like the right sequence, yes. But your original installation needs to be at least SP2 to install IE7, it won't install over SP1 if I remember right. Here's the important bit...

This any use?

Step 1: Disable conflicting programs:
-------------------------------------------------
From previous troubleshooting experience, it is found that programs like Dell Media Experience, Power DVD, ehtray.exe and DVD Launcher can cause the issue similar to the one you are experiencing. To resolve the issue, please disable these programs from running in the background every time you start the computer. Please be informed that when you disable these programs, you are not uninstalling them. You can start these programs by going to Start >> All Programs.

I would also like to inform you about the following applications that are known to interfere with the screensaver.
1. Ehtray.exe.
2. DVDLauncher.exe
3. Power DVD
4. PCM service.
5. Dell Media software.

The Microsoft software is not known to cause issues with the screen saver. This issue with the screen saver occurs due to third party applications running in the startup directory. The startup directory has files that belong to applications that are installed in the computer.

The Msconfig startup directory lists the files that are used to launch applications (e.g. like messenger software

Crap....

I already deselected DVDLauncher.exe yesterday. I've uninstalled Power DVD and still no good.

If I click on Preview for the Screen saver, it shows the screensaver for about a split second.

It's a laptop with a built in touchpad mouse.

Also, The power Setings (?) don't work. My monitor doesn't shut off aftet 5 min, doesn't go in to stand by and hard disks don't turn off.

Sounds like power management has somehow become disabled in your BIOS. This can happen at odd times, and during a reinstall - don't ask me how.

Check this out:

With all of those problems, I would just reformat and reinstall again. I have run into instances where you just get a bad install of XP from the start. It doesn't make sense, and it doesn't happen often but I've seen it. I don't think it is related to the XP install disk either. Earlier this year I lost a hard drive, so I had to install XP on a new one. All kinds of weird stuff was happening on the new drive. Games that have always worked and installed, just plain wouldn't work or they would throw out miscellaneous errors. And I would see unusual slowness loading specific programs. I immediately got rid of that trash and reinstalled. Everything worked fine after that.

I think you're seeing the same thing here, especially with the corrupted screen saver and power management programs. Did the updates issue get fixed? I've seen this weirdness too, most of the time it is because http://update.microsoft.com isn't added to the trusted sites list in IE.

Hopefully you haven't migrated any files to that new install yet, if you haven't then just reinstall again. It certainly won't hurt.

If your bios settings are changing on their own, the CMOS battery needs to be changed on the motherboard. The only thing the operating system should be changing in your bios is the system time, otherwise I'd be throwing that garbage out the window!
