Is Hollywood so inept and devoid of creativity that they just keep churning out these CGI laden crapfests of remakes and comic books?n. Or is the movie going public so juvenile and stupid that they lap up this garbage? |

Where's the incentive to really try? |

Never underestimate the ignorance of the masses. Have you watched television, looked at the so called music on the top 40, or watched elected officials in action? The ignorant masses think all these things are good and as it should be.

They'll churn out the stupidest CGI-ladened crapfest, because that's what sells these days. So long as people buy tickets to see this stuff they'll keep cranking them out. They don't care if it's a remake, a rethread, or unoriginal, as long as it makes money.

The times, they are a-becoming very different...Top 40 is dead, prime time TV dead too, and the same goes for big theatre. Quality can't be counted on anymore (to make money). So it melts down to this, the lowest common denominator.
Meanwhile, college kids with 2 decent cameras and a good computer are making surpisingly compelling and reasonably watchable little flicks... |

Iron Man cost 140m to make and made 318m in the US alone.
The math is easy to understand.
Makes me puke that entertainment *has* to equal wooden acting, CGI effects, a rehash of a story we've heard a million times, etc. But that's how things are and are likely to continue being.

Lets just say the average consumer of new movies seems willing to accept anything.
Hey... if you dont like the turd sandwich they are serving, visit your nearest blockbuster or check out netflix. Lots of good movies have already been made.

They're just like any other movie - some are entertaining and some should never have been made. It all boils down to a matter of taste, anyway. I grew up on comics and comics characters, so I'm actually happy to see many of those characters and stories brought to life. The problem arises for me as a fan when Hollywood changes the characters and storyline too much (i.e. X-Men). It's a nostalgia thing to a degree and I'm okay with that.
I agree that it seems Hollywood is rehashing a bunch of stuff. Like the new movie (the name escapes me) with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds (both actors I like okay) where they switch lives/bodies. How many of these "oh no, I've switched bodies with my friend/parent" flicks (ala Freaky Friday, Vice Versa) are we gonna have to deal with? Old concept, new cast.

Not at all.
The funny thing about it is that I remember the days that all the comic book fans (of whom I was one) would daydream about how someday they would make movies of our favorite characters (besides Superman) and that would get comics some kind of legitimacy. Now they're doing it and everyone complains that the movies suck.
The funny thing about it is that, if you think in terms of brain activity, reading a comic book is still reading -- more engaged, more active. Watching a movie is still watching -- passive and disengaged, mostly like watching TV. You would think that watching a movie would be universally regarded as mental cotton candy and reading comics would be considered a bit more adult and legitimate. But for some reason people still think of reading a comic as immature and derisory and watching movies as normal grown-up entertainment. People will happily go watch Spider-Man movies who would not be caught dead reading a Spider-Man comic.
Even more ironic is that nobody thinks there's anything strange about adults going straight to the three-frame comics in the newspaper, but reading through a 36-page narrative comic makes you either a kid or a nerd. I never got that.

| I agree with this. The recent wave of Batman movies, the Spider-Man movies, Watchmen (though they messed up the ending) and (IMO) the X-Men movies were well-done. There are also some great movies that the general public is only vaguely aware, if at all, ARE comic-book movies; Sin City, 300, Road to Perdition, I Am Legend. I enjoyed all of those. But the superhero genre is inherently limited and they've picked the best fruit already. Fantastic Four was mediocre but OK, and then there's the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Daredevil.... just awful.
