Renting in New York

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I'm a 23 year old Irish guy who got his 1 year working visa to the US and will be heading over to New York on the 6th of November. Really looking forward to it should be fun. The reason I ask here is because I don't know where else to ask and I like you guys!

I'm wondering about accommodation when I get there. I'll be working in Manhattan but looking at maybe living in Queens or Brooklyn as it's cheaper. I'm wondering is there any sites I should look at besides Craigslist? Anybody got any advice for me? From what I can gather renting a room in an apartment seems to be the cheapest option. Rent is so expensive in NY I'll be looking to keep it on the cheap side really. Can't afford $1200 a month for rent!

Any advice would be great guys, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

Where in Manhattan will you be working? If its uptown, I would say the Bronx is your best option as far as rent goes. If you don't mind commuting, you can find a cheap place and get to work from basically anywhere in the 4 boros (we don't count staten island, lol) using mass transit

Ya was thinking that. I'll be in Midtown hopefully, not definite yet. I guess I'll just have to wait until I arrive and then go view as many places as I can until I find somewhere nice. Some decent looking stuff on Craigslist.

If you look long the 6 line in the Bronx, you will find many many ghetto like areas. Even the last stop is starting to get grimey, and that surrounding area used to be very nice. I am sure you find something around the last stop on the 6 train for decent, only moderate rent. It takes about 45-1 hour to go the 6 line run. There is also the 4 line that gets nicer towards the end of the 4 line and that runs through Manhattan and into Brooklyn. The 5 is also running through the Bronx, one of the stops is by these decent apartment buildings (I think near Esplanade Ave?) that might be affordable. That train runs into Manhattan and gets there pretty quick.

The esplanade stop on the 5 is called morris park for some reason. I used to live over thee and it is pretty nice. The closer you get to white plains road the worse it gets, lol. Pelham pkwy is nice though...

Pelham bay isn't a good neighborhood??? I drive a bus through there and it seems pretty nice to me... Crosby, middletown, etc... All working class, blue collar people and its pretty diverse...

It is nice, but the train brings in a lot of gutter into the neighborhood. It's always had its shady points though. If you at the burhe stop and crosby, that little island with the benches used to he known as needle point park and they cleaned it up. Pb station is getting worse too. You can identify lower class areas by the presence of ATMs that give out ten dollar bills. They got that in that fried chicken joint. Country club will always be nice to me, its where I was born and raised. It's just over the years I noticed some areas of the surrounding neighborhood get crappy.

lol I never ate there before, and I do not think I would lol Just something about it throws me off that I do not trust it lol and 711 is just too much money lol The only place I eat from in that area is the Villa Barone Pizzeria. A bit pricey for a slice, but where hasn't pizza gone up? A bit further down is Giovanni's... a favorite of mine lol Just do not get the meataballs - then again, I never like meatballs anywhere unless they are homemade.

You don't like ljubo's down in the square? When I was in Lehman I would eat lunch there all the time, now they increaseed it to like 3$ per slice!

Never had it before. I am picky on my pizza lol My favorite pizza is from Louie and Ernie's on crosby and waterbury. Perfect sauce, thin slice, cooked well done = amazing. I will get Pinnochio's on Burhe when I am financially unsettled. 2.50 for a slice that's from wrist to my elbow! I used to love Loretta's pizza on Layton and Dean because it was a few blocks from my old house.

My boy lives on the Upper East Side, around 89th/90th & 2nd/3rd. He says the rent isn't too bad there. Plus he's 3 or 4 blocks from his work.

Thanks for the advice guys! I've more of an idea of what area I'd like to be living in and how much I want to pay for rent!
