Hi everybody.

Well, it happens that the Fulbright Association (Colombia chapter) is offering 5 scholarships for colombian artists (musicians, dancers, photographers, painters...) to study a postgraduate program in the United States. The offering is for any colombian artist with an undergraduate degree, with no age limit. Needless to say, I'm very interested in this and I'm planning to apply. The thing is: I must tell them where I would like to study. According to the terms, the scholarship covers tuition's full or partial cost and...

Tuition scholarship is negotiated in any university in the United States. The university defines the kind of scholarship assigned to each holder.
So I'm requesting assistance from you fellow TBers in the U.S.: Which universities should I try? Of course, my question points to both quality and chance of getting a full scholarship.

I'm really interested in this opportunity, since it's been my dream to study in the United States. Thank you in advance for your help!

Not knowing what your ultimate goal is, but Julliard and Berklee are 2 that come to my mind.

I am sure that there are others.

Only 2 that come to mind for me as well.

I believe Texas (U or state?) has a pretty good music program as well.

I went to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. When I went, there was a very heavy straight ahead jazz focus. Also in Philadelphia, Curtis is a very strict classical school.

The New School in NY has a jazz and comtemporary program.

Well, it really depends on what you want to study, doesn't it?

University of North Texas

edit: excellent jazz program, though very competitive and almost exclusively upright bass. I think they let steve bailey play electric

+1 if you are looking at jazz. They do have quality classical music there too.

Thank you so much everybody for your suggestions! Well, in all honesty, I'm not that much of a jazzer. Unless studying jazz is a must to get a postgraduate degree, I'm more interested in stuff like technique, styles, groove... BTW, forgot to mention that the scholarship covers two years of studies.

University of Miami has a school of music with a very good reputation (even though it pains me to recommend a rival university)

Frost School of Music | University of Miami

When I was looking around at schools, I was really into jazz, so it made sense for me to find a 'jazz school.' I think alot of schools 'teach' jazz because the theory really translates to any genre. I use what I learned in jazz theory classes on my salsa gigs, for example. When I composed a few Bollywood type songs, I took a lot of ideas from my counterpoint classes.

Actually, technique can also translate to any genre. Alot of teachers around here teach the Simandl method to jazz players. Although written as a classical method book, the exercises will help on any gig...from metal to smooth jazz, etc.

I believe that Oscar Stagnaro is teaching at Berklee. I would love to study with him.

One thing though, some of the websites list faculty members, but it would be a good idea to call and see if they are full time proffessors or just visit twice a year for clinics. Sometimes they try to oversell their faculty and half of the people aren't available for private study.

Got your point, Nick. Thank you so much! BTW, I want to mention that of course I know about Berklee and, based on its reputation, it would be simply terrific to be able to study there. The thing is, I know it's pretty expensive and I have no idea if asking the Fullbright Association to get an scholarship there would be like "flying so high".

First off, bump for a fantastic guy! Best of luck in getting the Fulbright. I nearly got one myself a long time ago.

I'm not sure how it works in the arts, but in graduate school in history you usually start by identifying what you want to study and then finding the leading people in that area and going to them, rather than choosing a school first and seeing who they have on staff.

If you can get help from people here in identifying what you want to learn (thus meaning who you want to work with), then you may be able to correspond with those people and see if you can get them interested.

Really hope this works out for you, Alvaro. It would be an amazing experience. You already have the perfect travel bass.

Indiana University has a really strong music program, and is in one of the nicest towns you could ask for. I've got younger friends choosing it over Berklee/NYU/Juliard for music.

Best of luck, Alvaro. Let us know how it goes.

I tried to post them on Myspace, but they were done under contract and they keep getting pulled for copyright issues. btw, they are not authentic Bollywood songs...more Bollywood inspired.
