Research Paper over marching band. Help!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a big research paper I have to write. I have always enjoyed marching band and drum corps so I thought it would be cool to do it over that. My though process was that I already know so much about it that it should be easy. And I can answer all my guide questions, but I have no citing!

So can anyone shoot me some links as to history and just good info on DCI, marching bands, and anything related to them?

Thanks!

never pick something you already know about ... your learning the hard way.

have you visited the library yet? if there aren't books on the subject your gonna be in trouble with resources.

I had a similar problem with paintball for a paper i did in highschool. There were no books worth a crap. I ended up finding a lot in magazines though.

are there any marching band magazines?

Well I thought there would be more historical facts and whatnot. But I guess I was wrong! Ha. I havent gotten to the library yet, but I have 5 citations due tomorrow and I have classes until after the library closes tonight.

I know there are some magazines, but not sure exactly what they are about. Im frinds with most the band directors around here, so I'll call a few and see if they have any or know about any.

And by the way, I can cite google. I need a real web article. Ha.

Dude...seriously?

You don't cite Google! You use Google to find "real" web articles that you can cite! It's called doing research.

Google Scholar.

Or just search JSTOR or something.

well my main points are DCI, High school marching bands (Pride of Broken Arrow, Avon High School, Coweta High School), and senior/ military corps. So stuff about the function and history of those.

I love it when someone comes onto a forum and asks other people to do their homework, instead of using a search engine to find citations themself.

I'm grading graduate papers right now, and not sympathetic.

Google search for "history of marching bands."

Im not asking them to do it. But I thought maybe someone else might know something I dont. And by learning that I will be smarter on the paper I have to write. I didnt know asking for help and wanting to know more about something I enjoy were bad.

As a bona-fide Older Guy™ who grew up long before the internet even existed, I would say that it's more accurately called "Googling stuff"

...but otherwise, yeah, +1

You're not asking for help. You're asking for sources which finding them is part of your assignment.

American Legion was in charge of Drum and Bugle corps before DCI was formed... check them. Some early innovators of marching techniques: A.R. Casavant also check William (Bill) Moffit.

Need more info to give any real advice. Are you in high school or college? What class is this research paper for? My vote would be to hit the library for the history of marching bands, and maybe to hit the archives of your school to see what you can find about the history of ITS marching band. You may find intriguing stuff. If this is for musicology or something, then you might want to spend more time on the music theory used in marching music rather than the history of the marching band as an institution.

Once I started thinking about it, I got intrigued. Surely marching bands started out as military institutions, no? How did it come about that schools started to have them, and then how did they get to be connected to sports events? That doesn't seem like a "given" to me and I'd be interested in seeing a good paper about how it developed.
