RIP to a great leader during the Civil Rights struggle in Birmingham. On a personal note, my Mother taught him in college. Actually, my Mom was younger than him, but in 1949, lots of returning veterans were back in school, and that fall, my Mom was new teacher at Selma University, a small Baptist black college.

My Mom told me that on the first day of class, a veteran said to her before it started, "girl, what time does this class start?" He begged her pardon once the class started, but it was no biggie for my Mom. She went on to teach, mainly at the junior high level until 1992. My Mom passed in 2006, and now I see another from her great generation has gone on as well.

Rev. Shuttlesworth, congrats on a life well spent.

Gotta say, out of all the civil rights movements, those are the people i have the most respect for. I think they had a true vision of equality and they were doing it the right way. The reason that they are all famous for saddens me, but what they did for people is amazing.

RIP.

I admired his complete lack of compromise when it came to the plight of his people.

He insisted that the world change or to be taken out of that world.

I just saw that today! Obviously, he did not need Rev. Shuttlesworh sort of courage, but Prof. Bell was certainly a man who stood up for principle when he could have just kept quiet, and made a ton of loot.

Living in Cincinnati, I had the opportunity to hear him speak a couple of times. Even as an upper-middle class white guy, he had me fired up to make some changes. Great man. Should really be held in similar regard as MLK.

A truly brave soul that the world needs way more of, in these times especially. I met him several times over the years, when he came to the school where I worked to speak with the kids. His talks were always inspiring. I was also honored to work with one of his daughters, who also played an important role in the cause.
