RIAA declares DRM is Dead

Sign in to disble this ad
The mighty RIAA has declared that Digital Rights Management is dead. Whether or not this affects anything is yet to be seen.

As a person that doesn't trust buying cd's since Sony started installing rootkits on computers; this would be a huge advancement.

My view is, if you pay for your music, you should be able to use it without fear; or continue to have your work pirated. (Looking at you iTunes!). This would be a huge advancement for a lagging industry.

Thoughts?

(gasp!) You is da Debil!!!

LOL!

C'mon! You mean that even though the price of CDs hasn't dropped since 1989, you aren't going to still cough up $16 for ONE CD containing only 10 to 12 songs?

Geez! It's like you want a fair deal or something!

If i had money, I'd buy used stuff from Amazon, and then rip it, and then store the CDs as backups. But i have no money, so i get music from my friends.

Why would anyone pay $16 for a CD? Most I ever pay is probably $13, usually more around $10. And ten to twelve songs is quite a lot with some of the bands I listen to. Twelve songs would be close to two hours of music with some.

I purchased a Michael Jackson No. 1 hits CD a couple of days ago for $14. It has about 17 songs on it. Less than $.99 a song being charged by iTunez.

That same CD is available at iTunes for $9.99. That's less than $14.

The worry comes from the things we know record companies have done in the past. Like installing rootkits on a computer without warning or permission from the user.

DRM is why I started buying CD's, now it's because you can get them used or new for cheap (half.com) and sometimes Itunes doesn't have the band I want, or it's at Itunes quality which ticks me off.
