Singer and guitarist Alex Chilton, known for his influential work with bands the Box Tops and Big Star, has died. He was 59.

Chilton's longtime friend John Fry says that Chilton died Wednesday at a hospital in New Orleans after experiencing what appeared to be heart problems.

Fry, the owner of Memphis-based Ardent Studios, says he has spoken to Chilton's wife and that she's very distressed. Fry said: "It was just a sudden and unexpected event."

Chilton had been scheduled to perform with Big Star on Saturday at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

The festival's creative director, Brent Grulke, says Chilton's gift for melody was second to none.

What?! I can't believe it. I saw Big Star just a couple years ago at SXSW, too. Damn, what a loss! RIP

I hope Paul Westerberg plays this one at his next show.

Get yourself the first 2 Big Star records -- as close to perfection as pop gets.

He was the Godfather of Indie Rock.

RIP, Mr Chilton.

For those who may not know, here's his career in a nutshell:
Had several hits with the Box Tops (at age 16!). Just about everyone seems to have heard The Letter.

In the '70s, he formed a band called Big Star which was critically acclaimed (but ignored). Great power pop and a big influence on REM and the Replacements, among others.

In The Street (later recorded and altered a bit by Cheap Trick to become the theme song for That '70s Show).

He later produced the Cramps' early records and did some work with The Replacements, who wrote a song about him.

Tremendous loss to music with both he and Mark Linkous passing in the last few days. Damn.

Listening to all of #1 Record / Radio City as I type.

As lead singer for the Box Tops, Chilton enjoyed at the age of 16 a number-one international hit, "The Letter." The Box Tops went on to have several other major chart hits, including "Cry Like a Baby", "Soul Deep", "Neon Rainbow", "Choo Choo Train", "I Met Her in Church", "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March", "I Shall Be Released", "Turn On A Dream", and "You Keep Tightening Up On Me".

Over the last few years, Alex reformed The Box Tops with four of the five original members and they were touring around the U.S. as well as a reformed Big Star was also doing shows.

I have recently been discussing maybe bringing The Box Tops into the area for a show and had been in discussions with their management. What a shame another great entertainer dies way too young.

Are your friends the two guys from the Posies, or are there different folks in the band now?
