I was surprised at his age too. Far too young.

Saw him at a little bar in New Haven in 1981. Great talent.

One of my favorite songs - Used to hear it on the radio back in the 70s.

I still play "Is that Jazz" as one of my warm up tunes. Loved his stuff in the day.

uh, not if you live like he did ... which was a damned shame as he was an amazing talent.

Saw him at UConn after "The Revloution Will not be Televised" Student Union show and I was just blown away ...

RIP Gil. Peace now.

Much respect, RIP.

His '90s album "Spirits" gets overlooked a lot, but it has some incredibly powerful songs and some great bassy music.

Gil was a great poet, composer, musician and activist. Here's is one of my favorite tracks with the amazing Robert Gordon on bass:

I doubt if the latest generation of hip hop and rap artists have any clue about his work.

RIP Gil.

He does appear on Kanye's album. I don't really consider him an artist though. I'm pretty sure real hip hop artists like Madlib etc sample him and The Last Poets quite a bit.

RIP Gil.
The guy that introduced me to him was a hip hop producer.

Definitely part of the soundtrack of my adolescence. "Johannesburg" and "The Revolution will not be Televised", "We Almost Lost Detroit".
The politics of protest, the music of the resistance.
We miss you.
