He was a nice man by all reports, and the TV show was a classic. Arness always conducted himself with class.

I was born in 1950, and I grew up watching Wyatt Earp (mentioned in the story), Gunsmoke and all the westerns.

Younger folks don't know that in the 50's, there were more westerns on TV than there are cop and crime shows today! They were everywhere, and they were fun.

I'm surprised there aren't more responses in this thread. James Arness was the embodiment of quiet strength in Gunsmoke. RIP Mr. Arness; you were a class act. We sure could use more like you nowadays.

Cheers to James Arness,watched quite a bit of Gunsmoke with my Grandpa since it is his favorite show and it really grew on me.

Great show and a great actor, RIP Marshall Dillon

Wow, no disrespect, but I thought he had died a long time ago.

Never got into Westerns much, but he seemed like a class act. That was back in the day when actors didn't have to be total tools to make themselves feel important.
