Former North Carolina State Wolfpack star Lorenzo Charles killed in bus accident - ESPN

Here is another one you kiddo's won't remember. I sure do. The 1983 NCAA Championship game is the first college basketball game I remember watching.

It was a great game. Houston was the clear favorite, and #1 team in the country. They were awesome with players like Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon, who are now in the NBA HoF. NC State was the Cinderella team, no one thought they'd get as far as they did excep,t Jimmy Valvano and his players.

I still remember exactly where I was when Charles dunked in Wittenburg's errant last second heave/shot.
(In a Bennigan's in Orange Park/Jacksonville, FL)...the whole place went nutz.

RIP, man...great game.

Phi Slamma Jamma...great dunkers, poor free-throwers. That's what cost them.

Oh yeah, Phi Slamma Jamma. I forgot about that. Remember Louisville that year? I think they were called something like The Dunk Doctors.

Gosh, it's so sad to hear Lorenzo Charles has died. His dunk broke my heart since I was always a huge Hakeem Olajuwon fan.

I will never forget watching that game. After he grabbed that airball and dunked it, I sat there for a couple of minutes, like, "Did that just happen?"
He was way too young to die. That makes two in three days with the last name Charles.. first Nick, and now Lorenzo. Bummer.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I was lucky enough to work with him for a few months.
