Road Trip ( New Orleans- New York )

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,

I need the wisdom of my fellow TB'ers. I've spent a week in New York City last year and I've also went to the 1. International GTG * with some friends.

*56K WARNING

Adron ( SoComSurfing ) sort of invited us to visit him in the South and since we've always wanted to do a Road Trip and I've also wanted to go the 2. Edition of the GTG so i had the crazy idea of combining both

ok so here's what we've planned so far :

23 July ( Thursday ) : We'll arrive in NOLA and stay there for 2 days. We'll start our Trip on Sunday and try to get to the New York metropolitan area on Saturday evening or early Sunday ( August 2nd )

Sooo we'd like to visit several cities along the way. Here's a list with some cities :

New Orleans,LA
Mobile,AL
Charleston,SC
Savannah,GA
Washington D.C
Philadelphia,PA
New York

What do you think is a realistic schedule ? Has anyone ever rented a car for a one-way trip ? What about attractions, nightlife etc. ? It would also be fun to hang out with some TB'ers.

Thanks a lot guys !

Just let me know what you need to know on New Orleans and count me in when you guys are here. Maybe we can do a GTG of sorts as we've never had one down here.

yeah absolutely. It would be cool to check out some bars etc. with local people and avoid some tourist traps. This would be more of a social gathering.

If you can make a pit stop from Georgia to DC; check out the Outer Banks of North Carolina. http://www.outerbanks.org/index.asp

Try hang gliding on that giant dune in Kitty Hawk.

For some reason I imagine Mobile, Alabama, to be the largest trailer park in all the world.

While we do have our share of trailers, they are mostly relegated to the outskirts of the city. Mobile is like New Orleans lite. We were founded by the same people. We have tons of old French and Spanish architecture. Both celebrate Mardi Gras. We're not as hickish as you might think. Here are a few pictures of the city.

Weird. Y'all look so civilized. I even think I saw people with shoes in some of the aerial shots. Where's all the people whittlin'? Where's the rusted pickup trucks? Why aren't y'all still wearin' the Confederate uniform or at least the battle flag as a poncho? Isn't it mandatory dress? If I didn't know better, I'd say those where pictures of New York City.

I think it's the name, 'Mobile'. It just doesn't project the right image.

What about Philadelphia? I'll meet you guys in Philly and show you around a bit if you're interested, there's a few really cool attractions there. New Jersey's also right across the bridge and on the way to NYC so I can even show you some cool stuff here as well. Soprano-land bars, full of beer and boobs what more can you ask?

Yeah if you pronounce it as in "mobile phone".

It's pronounced "Mo Beel" as in automobile.

Here's some initial NOLA thoughts, other fokls feel free to chime in:

Food:
Casimento's, Liuzza's, Mandina's, Port of Call,

Bars:
St. Joes, Tipitina's, Maple Leaf, One Eyed Jacks,

Just some initial thoughts.

If you guys could route through Baton Rouge, you'd have to go to The Perfect Bass in Baton Rouge. It is only 5 minutes off the main interstate (I-10).

Good one Mike!!!!!

In defense of our friends in Mobile, not all of Alabama is trailer parks anymore than in all those movies set in New Orleans where everyone walks around with thick cajun accents (which no one in NOLA does of course).

As a former resident and working player in NOLA, I'll second NOLA Bass' recommendations. You should also head down to Bourbon St. one evening and just walk up and down the street, there are some amazing musicians plying their trade there every night. Oh, an addition to the restaurant list, while you're on Bourbon St., hit Mike Anderson's (if it's still there...), that was a favorite of mine when I was working in the Quarter, every Saturday night, I'd have dinner there before my set.

Mobile is a beautiful city, my sister lives there (well, in Simms), and I was always impressed by how it reminded me of a "clean" NOLA, definitely not what one thinks of when "Alabama" is pictured in one's mind. Absolutely worth a visit.

I see Atlanta is not on the list, and if for no other reason than stopping in at the Atlanta Bass Gallery it should be...

While you're making your list, you might want to consider a jaunt through Greensboro, NC as well...I'll be happy to treat you guys to lunch and and a Roscoe shop tour. If you're staying overnight and the timing is right, I'll even drag the lot of you out to a baseball game, we have a wonderful minor league park just a block from the Roscoe shop.

Thanks Gard! Yeah, they'll need to see Bourbon but I want to make sure they "go local". We'll see what is going on closer to the time. Cool idea on a Roscoe Shop Tour, that sounds pretty killer.

Yes, absolutely make certain they get a chance to "go native" for a while! Just wanted to make sure that they didn't miss a chance to check out the guys on the street...if it's anything like it was 10 years ago when I was there, there are some utterly amazing musicians there!
