That's pretty broad...
I'm pretty well versed in DnD 3.0 and 3.5. From there, LARP and MMORPGs.

Although I am pretty familar with the games, I'm more of an expert on the miniatures aspect, as I am both an EX professional figure sculptor and painter.

I haven't ventured into 4.0 territory. But I consider myself pretty well-versed in 3.5.

I also spend WAY too much time playing DDO....

Read, a lot. Mostly focus on getting the mechanics down first. Know your class and such top to bottom.
Most importantly, have fun, and don't put a portable hole inside another portable hole.
Do you know what version he is playing? You'll at the very least want to "find" the manuals online to read as prep - but you'll definitely want to invest in the basic 4 at least to have at the table with you for reference...

I have no idea. They play once a week or so and I usually just shrug the invitations off. I'll ask him and read up before going, and I'll make sure I sit near someone I know pretty well for the game.

I'm familiar with 2nd edition and 3.0. I also used to DM 3.5 for a while.

Find out what version of the game they are playing. Supposedly 4.0 is a lot easier to pick up than previous versions.

One thing I can say for the game developers... they do a good job of making the game easier to learn while still keeping it entertaining. I mean, I started playing back when THAC0 was part of the game. Talk about confusing for a newbie...

Used to play 2nd edition for the first couple years of high school. A friend of mine was the "DM" and introduced us all to it. Then we all just sort of got out of it eventually. I used to GM a Star Wars RPG in high school as well (West End Games edition).

www.roleplayinggames.net has a nice online interface for running D&D online in a "play by post" format. I play a bit on there, since it doesn't take up much time.

RPG's? In videogame format, yes, I would consider myself pro. I've not played DnD. I am a WoW player though. Been an RPG kid all my life.

Give DDO a try. It's a different animal than WoW. I've played both. I have several 80's on WoW, have a lot of the PvP gear, etc. But, I still prefer DDO. More people working together and no having to watch your back every time you walk around.

How's the PvP? I have a raiding schedule, but I primarily play for PvP.

As for having to watch my back, not an issue, I play on a PvE server >_> (Area 52)
