Running Boot Camp on Mac

Sign in to disble this ad
If this has been covered somewhere, feel free to link me, i did a search but could find nothing about how to actually run it.

I got my Mac this week, and tried installing Nuendo on it to finish mixing my band's EP. I dont want to be using it, but im stuck as all the files came from the studio in this format, and we tried changing them to no avail. So im just using this for now, after which ill be using Logic.

So, we tried installing Nuendo (which works on Mac). But nothing worked. So my next course of action (in my head) was Boot Camp. Now i have no idea about how to do so, so i figured i would ask my TB brothers how to go about it.

So how would i go about doing this? I have no idea how to.. Also, what risks am i taking for the safety of my computer? (virus', problems etc)

I just got my Imac and I dont want to screw it up anytime soon haha

any help is welcomed

In the upper right hand corner is Spotlight. It looks like a magnifying class. Click on it and type in Boot Camp Utility. The application will guide you through the process. Do you have a copy of Windows to install? You'll need to do install it prior to installing Nuendo, if that's a PC software. Feel free to ask if you need any more help.

Yeah, i have a copy of windows XP (not doing Vista). Thatll work right?

Should i completely disconnect from my wireless internet at home while running windows? I dont plan on surfing the web while working, but would it best to complete disconnect it?

Also, when Im done, how should i go about getting rid of everything? Forgive me, as Im still learning the wonderful world of Mac. (been doing the tutorials and stuff online, only had it since monday).

Thanks for the help so far

Windows XP will install if it's a Service Pack 2 CD (you can't, for example, install XP and THEN the service pack).

If you got your mac recently, it's all you need.

And don't be scared when you start Windows. Here are two simple steps:
- Use IE to download FireFox.
- Use Firefox to download AVG Free. There you go

And when you're done with Windows, the Boot Camp utility (from your Mac OS) has an option to delete the partition. Just do that.

Thank you sir

How much space will this be taking up? And how well will it run? And if i chose to keep Windows on my computer afterward will it slow down the computer from running normally?

And im not entirely sure exactly what i have in the way of install CDs for XP, i know i just have them on my desk waiting for me to figure it out.

Ill give this a shot tonight when i get home. I know ill have a thousand more questions between now and then.

Side note: Since were on the topic, Virus Protection for Mac, do i need it, what should i get? Im using Firefox already.

The available virus protection for mac is basically software that makes sure your e-mail attachments don't contain Windows viruses. So you don't send them to other Windows users. Up to now, the periodic security updates are sufficient to keep Mac OS safe.

Having a Windows partition won't affect the performance of your mac at all. And vice-versa; Windows is actually really fast on Intel Macs. You should spare it a minimum of 10 gigabytes when partitioning, if you want XP to run smoothly and have some place left for your software.

Feel free to ask more questions

My friend who is running boot camp purely for ProDesktop partitioned his HD in the smallest way
Which is dedicating 5 GB to windows, it runs fine.

yep, so your kinda boned unless you get on bittorrent and download a copy with S2 (or s3) already on the install, make sure it's a copy where you'll still need to enter a key so you can put your key in and won't have to deal with the pesky anti pirating trolls.

Mines volume license from work so

I'm actually writing this on my mac with vista business installed on it, the partition is about 20g. And I can access my windows files from the mac partition but not vice versa. Runs pretty good no big issues unlike when i install vista on a PC.

yeah, service pack two is necessary because the xp install otherwise lacks appropriate sata drivers to support interfacing with the harddisk, among other things.

my xp install on my mac pro (2x2.8 ghz) works fantastically.

one thing - if you're going to be using this to run an audio program, you might want to make sure your windows partition is big enough to store the data you need. i don't think the windows partition will recognize free space on the mac partition, so you might run out of hard disk space for your files, otherwise.

mhm, i just made the mistake of not reading the instructions until after i started the install hahahah

but no worries, i restarted and booted up in Mac OSX and just got rid of the partition
ill have to go and find a higher version of XP to install

i just need it for about a month to finish mixing my bands EP and then im done with it and its on to Logic (which is a big part of the reason i got a mac)

and i was going to save everything on a separate hard drive anyways, and run XP on the smallest partition i could.

thanks so much for the help everyone, its really appreciated
