Another reason why I'll never have a swimming pool or hottub in my backyard. Children can unlock doors and it only takes a few minutes out of your sight to lose them. Hiowever, it does bother me that they don't say who WAS watching the child: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shu...urn=nfl,252593
Too sad.

I imagine it's "young kid wanders off, parents notice he/she's missing after a while then he/she's found at the bottom of a pool and cannot be revived.. I'll bet it's some close variation on that and it's TOO common.
You need to watch your kids when they are younger at ALL times, bottom line. The pool is immaterial, you just gotta watch them because if there's danger, they WILL find it.
EDIT - I broke down and read it, now that I seen the kid's face I'm getting choked up. This just sucks.

He (Cunningham) has performed baptisms in that same hot tub, according to reports.

. | Agreed! I always know where my son is. He is very smart and I don't trust him at all. He is two and we have a pool. I never ever leave him unnatendad for even a minute.
I have friends that had young children and pools that didn't even have gates. They had the same philosopy. If you watch watch watch them, they will not have the oppurtunity. All four of their kids made it thru that young age.
Very heart breaking story. I will not leave my kid with anyone who has a pool or jucuzzi.

The bottom line for me is, if you have a kid you keep an eye on them at all times. You know where they are. Especially if they're little. It's negligence in my opinion, regardless, if you let this happen to your kid. Pool covers are worth the extra money. Especially, if you can't for any reason keep an eye on your kid.

He wasn't with the mother, but was a big part of the kid's life... she threw a b'day party for the kid and while no one was looking (only took seconds) the kid had drowned. I think it was his 4th b'day party. My coworker wasn't at the party... and ended up taking a leave from work for almost 6 months. He's still not quite the same. |

Our friends who have a pool have an exterior door alert that tells when a door is opened, a latched gate around the pool and another alarm that goes off if something as big as a toddler or larger enters the pool at all. That's the only way to go in that situation IMO.

bc | I lived from birth to 24 years (and my brother, 22) in a house with a pool and jacuzzi. There was no cover (well that one time, but that was gone by next summer) no gate, no fence, no alarm, nothing. I was first taught to swim at 8 months, and again at 3 years. Only once as a child did I ever fall in the pool helplessly, and my Dad was in that pool not 3 seconds after I fell in. My point is, you dont need all these fancy locks & alarms and such when you, as a parent, take the responsibility to watch your kids & educate them of the dangers of being by a pool alone.
