Yeah, I was a big Raiders fan way back when, since the Patriots were so abysmal at the time. Al seemed like one of those larger than life guys that would live forever.

Not trying to wish anything bad on Al, but now the Raiders will actually have the chance to be a decent team for the first time in years. That's more than you can say for Dallas as long as Jerry's running the show down there.

Although I have ripped on Al for the last few years for his mismanagement of the Raiders, I will never forget the contribution he made to pro football as a whole. Thanks for your great contributions. RIP.

Long ago, he was innovative and one of the prime movers in shaping today's NFL.

Today we miss him - and the team will improve because he is no longer holding it back.

RIP, Al.

Been a Raiders fan since the time of one game a week on tv, in black & white. While he really hasn't been that effective in the recent past, what he contributed to pro football in the last 45 years can't be discounted.

Grew up on the Raiders and went to many-a-game when they were the LA Raiders and were dominant. (Even dated a Raiderette back in the day)!

Al Davis was great for the Raiders and the league, dating all the way back to the AFL. In recent years it seems he's been to old, too set in his ways, and more of a hinderance than a help. For more than a decade he has hired coaches, interfered with their ability to coach the team, fired them and turned around and hired another. He's done this over and over again.

It's sad that he has passed away, and hopefully the decades of greatness will be his legacy, and not the traveling circus that has been the Raiders organization the last dozen years or so. Now the team can finally move forward.

RIP Al Davis.

Definitely. He led the way in fair treatment of minorities and women in the NFL. He hired the first African American head coach, and the first Hispanic head coach. He was also the first to hire a woman as a CEO of an NFL team.

The way he treated his players behind the spotlight was beyond generous and fair. Few people know the stories of how he covered funeral expenses of former players and their families, how he took care of medical issues for former players and their families, how he gave former players jobs in the organization to help keep them afloat. All of it out of his own pocket when he didn't really have to, and he never wanted any attention to be drawn to it.

Al Davis was one of those people that you couldn't be on the fence about. It was either adoration or scorn. Sometimes at the same time! There is no denying he was good for football and good to those around him.

Job well done sir, you deserve a rest.

Count me among those who once said, "If Al Davis ever kicks the bucket, we'll finally be able to build a good team!" Boy do I feel like a bunghole now.

I even found myself tearing up at the news, go figure. We lost a pillar in the NFL. RIP Mr Davis

Yeah, he was definitely a divisive character, you loved him or absolutely despised him. I was glad to see the Raiders win yesterday. It was a fitting tribute to The Man.
