Download RealPlayer. Theres a thing that comes with the package called RealPlayer Downloader. it downloads and saves the files as .flv

if you use safari, I've found downloading youtube or any flash based clip is straight forward.
open your browser window to the webpage of interest w/ the clip embedded.
next, open the activity manager (Option-apple-"A"). Once the activity window is open find the link to the open browser window your interested in (usually its the titled the same as the page you looking at).
Locate the file ".flv" its usually still downloading when you open the browser window. If you double click on the link ending in .flv it should automatically download to your desktop as an FLV file. (alternatively cut-n-paste that link into a new browser)
Be aware that you'll need a seperate program that can run an FLV file to view this file
I use a free flashplayer called SWF&FLV player from eltima

I use www.keepvid.com. It downloads it in mp4 format.

I have used converttube.com in the past, which also allows you to download it in many formats including audio only. However, I find the site to be somewhat inconsistent in performance, and you can only download once every 15 minutes without having to pay extra for premium services.

For an internet-based application?

That's pointless.

I use GetTube as well. It's easy to use and put on my iPod Touch.
