Saw the aftermath of a fatal accident yesterday afternoon...

Went to pick up the kids after school and drove by the aftermath of this accident:

http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2...d_on_i-95.html

There was a body covered by a white tarp laying in the road along with a tarp covering something smaller (probably a body part) about 20" away. We drove past a sneaker still laying in the road. It really shook me up. Not sure if it was suicide or an unfortunate accident, but damn....

It does indeed shake one up. Confronting our mortality is not an easy thing to do, and at some level, seeing something like this does that in spades.

Sending good energy to both of you (mohawk and relic).

The bar I was at last night had a guy, who wasn't really that drunk, just a little buzzed from everyone who was with him, slip and fall in the bathroom. Turns out he cracked his skull and his head wide ass open. I don't know what happened with him, but he looked ok when they wheeled him out on a stretcher. It really makes you think how fast things can turn south.

I'm hearing a little bit more about this now. It's starting to look even more like it was a suicide. Apparently (according to witnesses), the guy parked his car, calmly walked a few yards down the highway, then stepped out into the right lane about 3 or 4 seconds before a flatbed truck hit him. It appeared to be very deliberate.
I dunno... I'm not one of those guys who will call people who commit suicides 'selfish" or "cowards" etc etc as I do believe that there's a lot of mental issues and even possibly mental/emotional illness that goes along with it, but choosing to end it so publically and morbidly IS really sickening. If the guy felt that he really couldn't go on, then he could have done so in private and so many people would not have been affected. Apparently the force of the impact disassembled the guy and since it was the start of rush hour, many people witnessed it.

Personally, if what you're saying is true, I find that act to be really selfish as the driver who inevitably hit him will probably have to live with that image, guilt, and experience for the rest of his/her life.

If he had instead done it privately, it would have been more respectful.

I'm sorry you had to see that. The sole consolation is that from your post, you insinuate you saw it on your way to pick your kids up ; not on the way back with them in the car. So if there's a silver lining, this is it.

Sorry you had to see that.

As someone else said, it was probably a good thing that the kids weren't in the car yet.

Regarding Fatal Accidents:

Even if it's a bit off topic, I'd like to offer this: I served as a volunteer firefighter in a small rural community for a number of years. We ran on a lot more MVAs (Motor Vehicle Accidents) than fires by a long shot. In a vast majority of the cases, we were pretty certain that if the occupants had been wearing seatbelts (or helmets in the case of Motorcycle accidents) they might just have made it.

I know this was a pedestrian accident and it's a bit different, but I still feel this is a good time to point this out.

Sorry you had to see this, and i Hope you get past this sad, negative episode soon.

Feel sorry for the driver of the rig who hit the guy. Talk about a candidate for post traumatic stress - even though it seems there was no way to avoid it, that has to affect you for the rest of your life.

We had two similar events happen on I-25. One, a lady jumped off an overpass in front of a bus. The other almost identical, lady parked jeep on side of car and then got hit.

On those pix from the news site, I can't believe they showed those with the blood still there and everything...seem's a bit morbid and disrespectful.

Well, I'm sorry you had to see that scene. I've had someone close to me commit suicide before. I was very firm in my belief that it is an extremely selfish thing to do. Over the years, however, I've studied a bit about mental illnesses. Granted, suicide does hurt many people most of whom had nothing to do with it but sometimes there are forces beyond the control of the victim that can overwhelm them. I'm talking about mental illness specifically.

Someone who does it for financial reasons or because they learned that they have cancer is a different story. They have more control over that decision than someone who suffers from a severe mental illness.

It's a sad, sad shame in any case.
Sorry you saw it. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm totally with you, man. In this case, I think doing it in such a public way was incredibly selfish, however. The driver could have swerved in a futile attempt to miss him and killed a family of 4. Plus what kind of long term ramifications might the driver deal with, after killing the guy. Very lame, IMO.

Yikes. When I lived on a farm I remember seeing the aftermath of kangaroos and cattle hit by trucks. Animals really are a bag of meat and organs. They burst on impact.

Plus I dont think its really helpful to judge someones suicidal actions as selfish, since if theyre at that stage then I doubt rational thought and consideration of others are really entering their minds.
